熟词生义

close 谁见谁眼熟，但在这儿它不再是「关闭」，而是 to end or to make something end, especially in a particular way「结束，终止」。比如，你发表总结，结束了会议，「结束会议」便可以写成 close a meeting。如果我们不想要现在的账户，想要注销，这个「注销」仍旧是 close。「注销账户」的英文就是 close an account。是不是觉得 close 平时不显山不漏水，肚子里的东西还挺多?

在标题中，closes $69 billion acquisition 应该写成 closes a/its $69 billion acquisition，才符合语法。不过新闻媒体的文章有个特殊性，标题常会省略一些虚词、代词等，所以标题没问题。

Investigators closed the case after concluding that his death was an accident.

调查人员在得出他的死因是一次意外事故后结案了。

acquisition

四级词汇 + 烤鸭词汇

动词为 acquire。除了表示「获得」外，在经济类新闻中，acquisition 多用来表示「收购」。比如，mergers and acquisitions 意思是「合并和收购」。下面我们读一读《经济学人》讲垄断现象的例句。

In the decade to 2019 the five largest technology firms made over 400 acquisitions with scant intervention by competition authorities.

lengthy

四级词汇

length 是「长度」，加上 y 后变成形容词 lengthy，表示 very long, and often too long「漫长的」。比如，很多人经过漫长的等待才盼来了自己的录取通知，英文可用 a lengthy wait 替换 a long wait。前者程度要更重。

另外，lengthy 还可以表示文章、讲话等「冗长的」。比如 a lengthy report 是指「一份冗长的报告」。下面我们来看《经济学人》有关韦伯望远镜的一个例句。

The release of last week’s clutch of images marks the conclusion of the telescope’s commissioning, a lengthy process intended to make sure it is fit for purpose.

Microsoft has closed its $69 billion acquisition of video game publisher Activision Blizzard, according to a regulatory filing by the company Friday. It’s Microsoft’s largest deal in its 48-year history and comes after the company quelled concerns about competition from U.K. and European regulators and gained a favorable ruling from a U.S. district judge.

filing

filing 派生自 file。file 常用来表示「文件」，而 filing 则是 the work of arranging documents in the correct files「存档，归档」。不过这条释义下，filing 是不可数名词。文中却是可数名词，所以这里的 filing 实则为「文件，档案」。因此句中 a regulatory filing 是指「监管文件」。同理，a bankruptcy filing 是指「破产档案」。

quell concerns

quell 是动词，表示 to stop sth such as violent behaviour or protests「平息，镇压」。新闻中时不时提到「平息骚乱」，英文便可用 quell the disturbances 来表达。

在本句中，quell 跟武力无关，而是表示 to stop or reduce strong or unpleasant feelings「消除，缓解」某种情绪，类似 relieve, alleviate 或 dispel,elliminate 等。比如，quell your fears 是指「消除恐惧」。

This latest setback will have done nothing to quell the growing doubts about the future of the club.

最近这次挫折对消除人们对俱乐部前景与日俱增的疑虑没有一点好处。

ruling

熟词生义

ruling 派生自 rule。作名词时，rule 是我们非常熟悉的「规则」。此外，它也常作动词出现，表示 to control and have authority over a country, a group of people, etc.「控制，统治」。

African tribal societies were traditionally ruled by a council of elders.

非洲部落社会传统上由长老会统治。

但它还有一个义项很常用，而且在各大考试中出现频率很高。在法律语境中，rule 用来表示 to make an official decision about something「判定，裁定」，尤其是对法律问题的裁定。其中，rule against sth 表示「裁定反对某事」。

The committee ruled against all-night opening mainly on safety grounds.

portfolio

portfolio 常见于金融类文章，外刊常用，指 a set of shares owned by a particular person or organization 个人或机构的「投资组合，有价证券组合」。比如，an investment portfolio 是指「投资组合」。怎么理解呢？举个简单的例子，如果你同时持有股票、基金，你的投资种类不单一，这就可以称之为「投资组合」。好，又是一个《经济学人》例句。

The most out-there part of Alphabet’s health portfolio is an effort to slow the ageing process—or stop it altogether.

Alphabet 的健康投资组合中最前卫的是一个想延缓或完全阻止衰老的项目。

reel in sth

这个词组什么意思呢？reel 作名词有「卷轴」的意思，你把卷轴往里卷，就能把线聚拢到轴上，所以，reel in sth 是钓鱼佬的最爱，表示「卷，钓」，因此「钓鱼」的英文可写成 reel the fish in。

另一方面，这个短语还引申为 to get or attract a large number of people or things，表示「吸引」大量的人或物。我们前不久刚学过一个类似的短语，是什么来着？pull in。

The FTC In July asked the San Francisco federal district court for a preliminary injunction to stop Microsoft and Activision from closing their deal before receiving full approval. But after five days of hearings, a judge sided with the two companies. The agency took the case to the U.S. Appeals Court for the 9th Circuit, which denied a motion to temporarily stop the consummation of the deal.

preliminary injunction

术语科普

要想理解这个词，需要理解美国一般侵权案件的流程，通常包括取证、立案、禁令、审判和赔偿。在法院受理案件的同时，原告会可申请法院签发临时禁令，英文为 Temporary Restraining Order，简称 TRO。其有效期通常为 14 天。如果之后还需要效力更长的禁令，原告会再次申请签发初步禁令，即 PIO，全名为 Preliminary Injunction Order。

其中，preliminary 用来表示 happening before something that is more important, often in order to prepare for it「初步的，预备的」，类似 initial。因此「初稿」我们可以说 a preliminary draft。injunction 则是法院的「强制令，禁制令」。下面我们来看《经济学人》有关 BYD 比亚迪的报道。

side with sb

这个短语很好理解对不对？side 作名词常表示「一边，一侧」。如果我站在你这边，意味着什么？我支持你。所以 side with sb 表示 to support or argue against a person or group in a quarrel, fight etc「支持某人」。相反 side against sb 表示「反对某人」。下面这个例句同时出现了这两个搭配。

The kids always sided with their mother against me.

孩子们总是和妈妈站在一边，跟我唱对台戏。

consummation

动词是 consummate，其中一个含义为 to make sth complete「完成」，但通常只用来表示完成交易合同等，因此不能完全等同于 complete。比如，consummate an agreement 表示「达成协议」，相当于 reach an agreement。

There have been several close calls, but no one has been able to consummate a deal.
