01

be prone to sth

Dylan Patel of SemiAnalysis, a semiconductor-research firm, points out that nanoimprint lithography is prone to defects because of the precision required to align wafers and moulds.

prone

prone 是个形容词，表示 likely to do something or suffer from something「易于…… 经常用于两个固定搭配，一是 be prone to sth，二是 be prone to do sth，相当于 tend to do sth。

The sense is that for people prone to depression, meeting their negative thoughts and feelings with compassion is a radically different way.

Presently, a swelling number of people are prone to depressive disorder, suffering from fatigue, anxiety, or even despair.

02

beef up

Why big oil is beefing up its trading arms?

beef up

beef up 表示 to make sth bigger, better, more interesting, etc.「加强，改进」。

New Zealand with 130,000 international students is also beefing up its recruitment strategy.

Ever-changing advancements in digital technologies are pushing us to beef up digital literacy, an ability to indentify and communicate information using digital media platforms.

03

on the part of sb

The squeeze on supplies will therefore be historic, meaning that sky-high copper prices will no longer be indicative of optimism on the part of industrial machinery-makers, construction firms, electronics manufacturers and the like.

on the part of sb

也可以写作 on your part。

There is a lot of sympathy for the accused woman on the part of the public.

在第一句中，on the part of the public 意思是说公众 show sympathy for the accused woman，公众对这个被控告的女人深表同情。

In other words, even an able manager like Mr Cote needs a bit of luck, and patience on the part of directors and shareholders, to turn a company around.

It takes a lot of hard work on everyone's part to protect our natural surroundings for future generations, making a positive impact on our planet.
