大雅久不作，吾衰竟谁陈？

王风委蔓草，战国多荆榛。

自从建安来，绮丽不足珍。

圣代复元古，垂衣贵清真。

群才属休明，乘运共跃鳞。

The grand Odes long have ceased to sound,

My strength fades—who shall truth proclaim?

The folk lays lie in weeds unbound,

Warring states choked with thorn and flame.

Dragon and tiger hunt each other’s life,

Blade and spear rage till Qin’s fiercereign.

Pure orthodox song dims in strife,

Sorrowful odes rise from the poet’s pain.

Yang Xiong and Sima roused the fading tide,

Spreading verse’s stream o’er boundlesslands.

Though rise and fall through ages slide,

The ancient rites sink in shifting sands.

Since Jian’an’s bards began to write,

Gilded ornate lines deserve no praise.

Our sage age revives primeval light,

Plain sincerity our highest grace.

All gifted bards meet peace’s hour,

Riding fate to leap like scaled fish free.

Form and soul glow with equal power,

Autumn sky strewn with starry array.

My vow: to sort and codify verse,

Let radiance shine through thousand years.

If I attain the sage’s worth,

I end my brush when the unicorn appears.

2. Yang and Ma: Yang Xiong and SimaXiangru, masters of Han-style prose;

Gnawing the moon of jade bower high.

Floating clouds veil both sun and moon’ssoft ray,

All creation drowns in misty grey.

Changmen Palace stands in bleak decay,

Once splendid, now all grace gives way.

Worms gnaw cassia blooms that bear nolight,

Heaven’s frost hurls harsh dominion’smight.

I sigh deep through the endless night,

My grief spills tears—my robe is wet withplight.

He melted arms to bronze colossi tall;

Eastward Hangu’s gate stood open unto all.

On Kuaiji crest his feats were carved instone;

From Langya Tower he scanned the seasalone.

Seventy thousand convicts toiled in fear,

Piling earth within Mount Li’s encirclingsheer.

He chased the herb that grants eternallife;

Vain wanderings stirred his soul withbitter strife.

Volleyed crossbows aimed at ocean’s giantprey;

A towering leviathan surged up to stay.

Its brow and snout rose like five peaks onhigh;

Its spout sent billows, thunder through thesky.

Its mane and fins veil all the blue expanse—

How might one reach Penglai’s fairyadvance?

Xu Fu embarked with Qin’s young maidens onmain;

When shall those towering argosies comeagain?

But only see beneath the Nine Springs deep,

A golden coffin holds cold ashes in sleep.

其四

凤飞九千仞，五章备彩珍。

衔书且虚归，空入周与秦。

横绝历四海，所居未得邻。

吾营紫河车，千载落风尘。

药物秘海岳，采铅青溪滨。

时登大楼山，举首望仙真。

I seek the womb elixir long denied,

Trapped in mortal dust a thousand years’claim.

Immortal herbs hide beneath mount and tide,

I gather lead by clear brook’s bank.

Oft climb Great Tower Peak, gaze far andwide,

To seek true immortals rank on rank.

Their feathered chariots fade from sight,

Wind-driven carts turn back no flight.

I fear my cinnabar brew lags in light,

My sacred vow can ne'er see light.

Grey hair alone greets my mirror’s gaze,

Ashamed before crane-riding seers.

Where peach and plum bloom in earthly haze?

Their spring is not the sphere I revere.

I long for pure celestial lands,

To dwell with Han Zhong hand in hand.

Great White Peak looms in blue-grey haze,

Rows of stars array its lofty crest.

Three hundred li it stands from heaven’sblaze,

Cut off from mortal world’s unrest.

A green-haired elder dwells therein,

Wrapped in cloud, beneath pine snow helies.

No laugh, no word escapes his chin,

Deep hidden in rocky cave’s disguise.

I come and meet this true divine,

Kneel long to beg his precious lore.

He smiles, unveils his pearly shine,

And tells me how to brew pure ore.

His words engrave my very bones,

Then he leaps up, gone as lightning’sflash.

I gaze aloft, beyond my moans,

All five passions burn in sudden dash.

I’ll grind red cinnabar to brew,

And bid all mortal men adieu.

Now on the Dragon Court my watch I lie.

The whirling sand veils the sun o'er desertwide,

And drifting snow hides the frontier wildsinside.

Lice swarm within my plumed helm's oldcrest,

My soul still chases banners in the fray.

Hard-won campaigns bring no honour toattest,

My loyal heart finds no tongue to convey.

Who pities General Li, the Flying Knight?

White-haired, he wastes away on frontiers'height.

其七

五鹤西北来，飞飞凌太清。

仙人绿云上，自道安期名。

两两白玉童，双吹紫鸾笙。

去影忽不见，回风送天声。

我欲一问之，飘然若流星。

An immortal rides green cloud on high,

Wind bears celestial hymns up soon.

I yearn to question their divine train,

They drift away like shooting star rain.

I crave to eat gold herb of light,

He squanders youth in wanton blast.

Yang Xiong knew not the worldly art,

Late offered Changyang Rhapsody to thethrone.

His verse acclaimed, yet age tore himapart,

Hair thin as silk when writing Mystery’sTone.

He leapt from tower—sad fate to tell,

Mocked by such shallow rogues as well.

Zhuang Zhou dreamed he was a butterflyfair,

The butterfly dreamed it was Zhuang Zhou.

One being shifts through every shape andair,

All mortal things drift slow and slow.

We see Penglai’s vast ocean tide,

Shall shrink to shallow brooks one day.

The melon-grower by Green Gate’s side,

Was once Lord Dongling in his sway.

Wealth and rank are fleeting mist at best,

Why chase vain cares with endless quest?

In Qi lived a bold, unrestrained sage,

Lu Lian stood peerless, pure and bright.

He spurned a thousand gold's lavish gift,

Smiled at Lord Pingyuan with calm delight.

I too am free, unbound by earthly chain,

I shake my robes, to share his noblestrain.

Who knows, above the Silver River's pause,

胡关饶风沙，萧索竟终古。

木落秋草黄，登高望戎虏。

荒城空大漠，边邑无遗堵。

Their heaps, half-buried in the tangledwood.

Who wreaks this ruin, this oppressivemight?

The arrogant nomads kindle war's red light.

Our sacred sovereign, roused to righteousire,

Summons the troops, beats loud thewar-drum's choir.

The breath of peace turns to a murderousblast;

Levies are raised, the heartland's peace ispast.

Three hundred sixty thousand souls in pain

Shed endless tears like torrents in therain.

In sorrow they to war's harsh summons go—

How tend their farms, their gardens leftbelow?

Who knows the grief of mountain frontiersdread

Till they have seen the soldier's bloodbeshed?

Li Mu is gone—no guardian now remains;

The border folk are fed to wolves andjackals' chains.

燕昭延郭隗，遂筑黄金台。

Ju Xin came over from the Zhao domain;

Jewels and jade are spent for song andmirth,

While worthy men are fed on husks ofdearth.

Now I perceive—the crane shall spread itswing,

Roam a thousand leagues, still wandering.
