The Door Without A Handle

By Iris (15 years old)

If a door has no handle—does it keep a secret locked inside, or does it keep us locked out?

ACT 1

The blizzard had been going on for six hours when I finally parked my car in the parking lot of the Pin Member Motel. It was the only motel for miles on the way here; I did not see one person, not even a dog. I took the luggage out of the trunk, stepped into knee-deep snow, and trudged towards the motel. The clerk was an old man with snow-white hair, sitting on a couch that appeared to be the same age as him. "Room 212," he said, giving me the key. He didn't look at me again. The conversation ended there.

The room was better than I thought—I had braced myself for stained carpets, a flickering light, maybe a window that wouldn't shut, the usual roadside motel smell of bleach and old smoke. But this one was clean. Tidy, even. A television on the wall. A bed that sagged in the middle. A chair beside it. But there was something that I didn't expect: a door painted dark red. It had no handle, no keyhole, like a narrow red wall. I went back to the front desk. The old man was still sitting behind the desk. "Room 212," I said. "There’s a red door in the room. What's behind it?" He didn't move and said flatly. "There is no red door. You must have been too tired. Writers like you always have imaginations." "How did you know I am a writer?" "We get all kinds here. Now go back to your room." Then he smiled—not a kind smile.

Full of questions, I returned to my room. I picked up my manuscript, thinking about where the door would lead, but I just kept it by my side. I drew the curtains, turned off the lights and fell asleep.

ACT 2

I woke up at 2 a.m. The wind had died down and everything was silent, except for a scratching sound coming from behind the door.At first it was faint—like a mouse scratching the wall, but it grew louder as if there was somebody behind the wall trying to get my attention. My hand shook as I took out my phone to record the sound. My heart raced and my mouth went dry. Barefoot, I tiptoed towards the door, holding my breath. Slowly, I held my phone near the door. My hands were damp with sweat. I stood there for one minute. Suddenly, the scratching stopped. I remained where I was, trembling. I played back the recording. The scratching was there, clear as day, but behind it—no, instead of it—there was something else. A child crying. Not loud or desperate for attention, but the quiet, hopeless sobbing of someone who had been crying for their whole life. I played it again and again. The sobbing echoed in the darkness. My mouth opened and closed, but no words came out.

I didn't sleep after that.

I sat on the edge of the sagging bed, the recording on loop in my headphones, the child's sobbing carving itself into my skull.

At 6 a.m., the first grey light bled through the curtains, and I decided I needed to know what the old man was hiding.

ACT3

The front desk was empty. The old man's couch sat abandoned, a half-empty cup of instant coffee still warm to the touch

A memory surfaced without warning.

My mom had stepped out of the motel room with a cup of coffee left on the table. The same smell lingered in the air. The smell of instant coffee. But I had never noticed the resemblance before.

I shook my head. It’s not the time to dwell on old memories. Behind the counter I found a dusty filing cabinet. The bottom drawer was locked. No key in it. I just pulled it slightly and the wooden frame let out a low, strained “creak”. Followed by a“Crack” of the wooden latch ripping apart. The whole drawer was in my hand. There was only one thing in the drawer: a newspaper.

I folded it and put it into the inner pocket of my jacket. After putting everything back, I rushed to my room. It felt like when I was young, running in the hotel to catch my father and beg him to stay. But the feeling was different.

This time, I was running towards the truth.

Back in my room, I unfolded the newspaper and spread it wide open on the bed.

The headline: BOY VANISHED FROM MOTEL ROOM 212

The photo on it showed a boy about five years old, smiling. He had some freckles across his forehead and his teeth were slightly protruding. He looked familiar—like a dream you couldn’t quite remember but recognized.

A short passage explained what happened: The boy went to the motel with his parents. Mom—Nadia, Dad—Jacob. His mom had just left the room for ten minutes. After she came back, the boy was missing. No signs of a break-in, no notes. All that remained was a red door with no handle. “The door wasn’t there when we checked in,”Nadia told reporters.

The investigation was continuing. The chief was quoted saying, “If you have any clue, please come to the police station nearby.”The date beneath the article read:1 January 2000.

I was five years old in 2000. My mom’s name was Vivian, an IT engineer. I didn’t even remember my father. She hadn’t changed her name since she was born. As for my father, other than the feeling of chasing after him down a hallway, I had very few memories of him.

On the other page, a handwritten sentence caught my eye. “He is in the door. His mother was too scared to open it. Another page also had some handwritten words from different people. “I know he is in there, but I can’t do it.” “Sorry, I’m so scared…”

ACT 4

The blizzard ended the next morning. The color of the furniture seemed more vivid in the daylight.

I stared at that newspaper until the words blurred. Hours passed. Then I knew what to do.

I tore a small piece of paper from the newspaper and wrote: WHO ARE YOU? The letters were shaky, like the handwriting of a child who had just learned how to write. I pushed it into the gap between the door and the floor. I waited. No wind, no sounds of cars, just a beam of sunlight illuminating the door.

As I was about to leave, the paper slid back with almost the same handwriting as mine. Just two words: YOU ARE.

I stared at it for a moment. The words shook in my hands.

I looked up at the figure reflected by the television. A writer in a white T-shirt.Messy hair flying in the air. Then the figure changed. It became smaller and smaller. A five-year-old boy looked back at me. He smiled at me and began his story.

He was in the car. His family was going to welcome the new year in their house, but the strong blizzard disturbed their schedule. They stopped at a nearby motel and checked in. The next morning his mother brewed two cups of instant coffee and sat in the chair to finish her work. Suddenly his parents had an argument he had heard many times before. Each time, only a small letter could lead to broken bowls and shouted words.

But this time it became even worse. His father opened the door and left. He tried to stop him, saying all the words he could think of . He disappeared behind a corner of the hotel and then he was gone.

His mom told him to stay in the motel room and she would come back soon. Then she left too. He just lay on the bed, counting how many times they had argued. But he failed. He didn’t even know when to start. Then with a crack, a red door opened. He turned his head, surprised to see it. A boy stood inside, with the same hair, same teeth and same freckles. The boy gave him a smile and said “Swap?”, holding out his hand, “I’ll take your place. I will help you endure those arguments.”

The moment their fingers touched, the world twisted. He stood in the darkness, no way to get out.

I looked at the reflection in the television, unable to tell the difference between us. Was I the boy ?Was the boy me? I had been left behind a door for years, waiting for my mother to come back. For twenty-six years,I had remembered the wrong life.

The red door was in front of me. Now, I know how to open it. Not with a knock, not with a key, but by choosing to accept who I was.

I pressed my palm against the door and said “I remembered. I’ve made my choice.”With the same “crack” as twenty-six years ago, the red door opened. And on the other side stood a tired man—tears still lingered on his face, with a hint of surprise in his eyes.

“Swap?”, he offered me his hand.

I looked at the dark world behind him, endless. For a moment, I wanted to turn around, run away from here and never recall this memory.

But I had made my choice.

I took his hand and stepped into that world without light.

And the door closed behind us both.

ACT 5

The old man at the front desk found Room 212 empty. No luggage. No manuscript. No phone. Just a bed that sagged in the middle, a chair beside it, and a single piece of paper on the floor. On it, two lines of handwriting: one in pencil, one in ink:

"He's behind the door."

"We both are."

The old man folded the paper, tucked it into his pocket, and smiled. He'd seen this before. He'd see it again.
