1896年，30岁的康定斯基决意放弃前景光明的法律事业，全身心投身艺术。他回绝了声望卓著的多尔帕特大学（今爱沙尼亚塔尔图大学）的教职。后来他回忆，这一抉择深受两段经历影响：一是1895年在莫斯科参观法国印象派画展，尤其是克劳德・莫奈作于1888‑1891年间的《干草堆》系列其中一幅作品；二是在大剧院观看瓦格纳《罗恩格林》的演出。同年12月，他迁居慕尼黑，彼时这里是世纪之交欧洲最重要的艺术中心之一。
在德国，康定斯基参加艺术课程，了解了以捕获瞬间光变化的印象派，强调色彩的情感特质的野兽派，以多重角度观测事物的立体派，在现代艺术不断去除、简化的发展趋势下，自然而然地将他推向了更加注重形式美感的“抽象艺术”之路。
