Grand Canal Media News (Xu Rong):A cup of clear tea can bridge mountains and seas; a touch of elegant charm can reach the hearts of people. From August 17th to 27th, during the cultural exchange trip to India organized by the Yangzhou Heyun Art Troupe under the event “The World and Us: China Festival – India Station”, a Chinese-style tea ceremony also brought out the beauty of Eastern elegance in a foreign land. For Hou Ying, the secretary-general of the Yangzhou Heyun Art Troupe and a practitioner of this traditional art form, although this trip to India was full of uncertainties, she truly understood the importance and difficulty involved in folk diplomacy.

The time available for this visit was very limited. The team took on this challenging task with great urgency and managed to complete all preparations in just over a month. However, it was only after arriving in India that they were informed that the scheduled performance in Delhi had been canceled due to local circumstances. The unfamiliar environment itself was already a challenge, and the sudden changes in the itinerary further caused anxiety among everyone. “At first, I felt quite disappointed by the continuous adjustments to the schedule. Stage performances are more about form than substance; however, the setting, decorations, and atmosphere can contribute more to creating a sense of beauty and ritualism compared to a traditional street-style presentation,” said Hou Ying.

Without a ready-made stage, one can create one. Communication doesn’t have to take place only under the spotlight; as long as there are people present, there is room for dialogue. This time, the art troupe brought four traditional Chinese cultural heritage items: tea ceremony, guqin music, incense traditions, and lacquer fans. Therefore, the team quickly arranged for these exhibits to be held at the hotel where they were staying. Without the support of a professional stage, a tea table, a set of tea utensils, and a scent of tea become the entire means of cultural transmission.
When the performance shifted to an open, close-distance format, Hou Ying felt somewhat nervous at first: there are significant differences in eating and drinking habits between China and India. Indians prefer strong-spiced flavors; will they be able to accept the light and elegant Chinese tea drinks?

She told reporters from Grand Canal Media that, as a form of folk diplomacy, tea ceremony is characterized by the fact that Chinese tea ceremony is an important part of traditional Chinese culture. It isn’t just about brewing and drinking tea; every step—selecting utensils, heating water, brewing tea, serving tea, and enjoying it—requires careful consideration and respect. It serves as a spiritual means for Chinese people to cultivate their character and moral integrity. Therefore, at the event, she chose to simplify the complex procedures involved in the tea ceremony and focus on the act of brewing tea itself. Her goal was to allow the people of India to see, feel, and taste the true charm of Chinese tea up close.
During this visit, she also specifically selected Yangzhou’s intangible cultural heritage products: jasmine yellow tea and rock tea. “Jasmine flowers are a distinctive cultural symbol in China. The people of India have a special fondness for the natural, delicate fragrance of jasmine in yellow tea. I didn’t choose the well-known Lvyang Chun tea because green tea is cold in nature and not suitable for those with weak digestive systems. Yellow tea, on the other hand, undergoes a mild fermentation process, eliminating the bitterness and coldness associated with green tea. Thus, it is suitable for people of all ages.”

At the hotel, the tea setup was not yet complete, but it quickly attracted guests who wanted to see what was happening. Everyone was curious about every item on the tea table. However, there was no power supply for the display area, and it was impossible to use charcoal to heat water for making tea. Making tea requires high standards regarding water quality and temperature. Not only is the local water quality different from that in other countries, but it is also difficult to provide hot water at the right temperature consistently. Faced with these practical limitations and the discomfort caused by high temperatures, Hou Ying decided to take proactive measures. She adjusted her strategies effectively: she prepared Wuyi Rock Tea and Yangzhou Intangible Cultural Heritage Jasmine Yellow Tea for guests to taste, and also prepared cold-tea preparation methods in advance, so as to ensure that the tea-making process could continue without interruption.

Despite the various limitations, the results were far beyond expectations. What impressed Hou Ying was a man who stayed at the tea table for a long time, savoring the tea carefully while also inviting others around him to experience it as well. Near the end of the demonstration, he even approached her specifically and asked for a photo together. “The interaction at the event helped to bridge the gap between me and the people of India, allowing for a genuine connection between us.” Hou Ying said. A sincere and simple form of cultural exchange has received a meaningful response. The head chef of Hyderabad Park Hotel came to the tea table specifically to discuss this matter, expressing his desire to introduce Jasmine Yellow Tea, so that both the local Indians and tourists from around the world could enjoy the aroma of Eastern tea from Yangzhou.
The demonstration at REYANSH Vocational College left her even more impressed. The students lined up in an orderly manner waiting to taste the tea; their eyes showed curiosity, interest, desire, and kindness as they carefully observed every step of the tea-making process. After tasting it, many children gave enthusiastic praise. This unhidden enthusiasm transcended cultural differences and reached the heart of people.

Tea drinking is also an interesting perspective for observing the cultural differences between the two countries. According to Hou Ying, the native tea tree species and tea-making techniques in India originate from China, but local drinking habits have developed their own unique characteristics. People in India prefer masala black tea; this type of tea is made by mixing a large amount of spices with black tea, resulting in a strong and sweet taste. In contrast, China has a diverse tea system, with six main types of tea, each with different processing methods and flavors. Tea not only has culinary value but also offers health benefits, and it has become an integral part of Chinese daily life.
From the initial plans for public performances, the focus has shifted to various settings such as hotels and schools, allowing physical distances to be reduced and interactions to become more frequent. In Hou Ying’s view, the Heyun Art Troupe, as a local folk group, plays a role in facilitating cross-national exchanges through cultural, social, and economic aspects. Mutual visits, artistic performances, cultural exchanges, and trade activities enable ordinary people from both countries to get to know each other more closely, effectively breaking down barriers and stereotypes, and fostering mutual understanding and goodwill among the people, thereby creating a foundation for friendly relations between the two nations.
