当大脑是公路,烂梗就是堵路的烂车:一篇关于信息、注意力与意义的自言自语

外语自言自语陪练 | 雅思冲分 | 2026-10-09 周五

本系列为「契苾小优」雅思备考专用输出,转载请注明出处。

外语自言自语|场景:白天通勤盯车流,夜里刷手机越刷越空,两件事都让我逮住自己想简单了|语言:英语为主(中文只救场)| Foreign-language self-talk · scene: caught myself oversimplifying on the real road and the feed · language: English-led, Chinese only to rescue

陪练对象:小优(契苾小优,古凉州今武威)

外语独白 · Foreign-language monologue

Tonight I caught myself scrolling again, and something felt wrong. The feed was not empty, it was overfull, yet my head felt hollow. A meme pops up, then ten versions of the same meme, then a song made from the meme, then a video stitched from three other dying memes. Nobody is really laughing. We are just, as 小优 put it, the laughing milk-dragon, repeating the motion of laughter without the thing itself.

The brain wants comfort, he said, so don't play rotten memes. Traffic wants to flow, so don't drive clunkers. At first I thought it was just a clever line. Then I realized it is almost a theory of mind. Language is the vehicle of thought. If the vehicle is a clunker, the thought never arrives. You sit in traffic inside your own skull.

嗯,这个比喻我越想越对。I used to think "brain as a road" was just a cute image. But the more I sit with it, the more it explains why doomscrolling leaves me tired instead of fed. Thoughts are cars; attention is the fuel; the prefrontal cortex is the dispatch center deciding which car gets a green light. When the road is jammed with cheap, copied memes, the real cars, the slow careful ones that actually go somewhere, they just idle.

And this morning, on the 7:40 bus, the same habit showed up on a real road. I watched the jam and my brain muttered: more cars must mean more deaths. Then I stopped. Wait, that is me drawing a straight line where there may be none. That little pause, catching myself before jumping to a conclusion, is exactly 元认知, thinking about my own thinking. 很多富国车多反而路更稳,车多不等于死人多。I was about to do the classic mistake: read a correlation as a cause. The same trap, two roads, one mind. Tonight's small rebellion: I put the phone down, and I tried to say one real sentence out loud, in English, about why I was annoyed. It came out clumsy. But it was mine. That, I think, is what driving your own car feels like.

语法笔记 · Grammar notes

Two grammar points, both from today's data talk. First, the comparative correlative: the + comparative …, the + comparative …. The whole decay runs on a vicious version of it.

• The more low-quality memes flood the feed, the less meaning survives.

• The more we outsource thinking to copied content, the weaker our own sentences become.

Watch the word order: the clause with the comparative comes first, and you must keep the second the. A classic slip is ❌ "More memes, less meaning." ✅ "The more memes, the less meaning." 这结构今天整篇都用得上,因为是"越……越……"的恶性循环。

Second, from the charts: data is technically plural. "The data show an explosion" reads better than "the data shows," though both appear in modern usage. Also the pair the number of vs a number of: the number of crashes has fallen (singular, "the number" is the subject); a number of countries have invested in rail (plural, "countries" is the subject). 我老把 the number of 当复数,其实是单数,记住"number 本身作主语就是单数"。

中式英语易错 · Chinglish traps

• 烂梗 is not "rotten stem." English has no single word. Say a vapid / low-quality / cringe meme, or internet sludge. The point is the emptiness, not spoilage.

• 开烂车 literally "drive a rotten car" sounds bizarre. We say drive a clunker or a beat-up car. The metaphor survives: a clunker on the mind's highway.

• 大脑舒服 → not "the brain feels comfortable." Better: the mind stays clear / uncluttered / sharp. Comfortable brains are exactly the problem, they want the easy road.

• 语言是思维的载体 → "Language is the vehicle of thought." Perfect, because vehicle literally means "that which carries," the whole bridge to the traffic metaphor.

• 大堵车 → not "big traffic." Say heavy traffic / severe congestion. "Big" belongs to size, not flow.

同义替换 · Synonyms & swaps

• decay of meaning: decay / rot / corrode / atrophy / erode (meaning atrophies like an unused muscle)

• spread fast: proliferate / mushroom / balloon / snowball / go viral

• empty content: vacuous / hollow / inane / vapid / substance-free

• capture attention: hijack / colonize / monopolize / crowd out (cheap memes crowd out real thought)

• fix the habit: reclaim / take back the wheel / regain control of

• rise (chart): climb / surge / soar (别只会 increase)

• cause: lead to / result in / give rise to (因果别只堆 cause)

• many: a host of / numerous / a multitude of (去模板化)

今日新词 + 词根串联 · New words & roots

• proliferate prəˈlɪfəreɪt: pro- (forward) + ferre (to carry, bear) → "bring forth in quantity." Same root as fertile (bearing much), confer (bring together), offer (bring toward). Memes proliferate because they are built to be carried.

• vacuous ˈvækjuəs: from Latin vacuus "empty." Cousin of vacuum, vacate, evacuate. A vacuous sentence carries no cargo.

• neuroplasticity: neuro- (nerve) + Greek plassein "to mold" + -ity. The brain literally remolds itself by what it rehearses, the road is paved by the cars that pass most often.

• meme: coined by Richard Dawkins in 1976 from Greek mimēma "that which is imitated" (mimeisthai "to imitate"). A unit of culture that replicates, the original "vehicle of an idea."

• correlation ˌkɒr.əˈleɪ.ʃn: com- (together) + relatio (a bringing back): two things are "brought back together" often enough that we notice a pattern. Same com- family as commute (com- + mutare 变换 → 换班通勤) and communicate (一起分享).

• infrastructure ˈɪn.frəˌstrʌk.tʃə: infra- (below) + structure (building): the hidden frame, roads and rules, that holds a system up. Same struct family as construct, structure.

词源小知识(回扣):vehicle← Latinvehiculum"that which carries," fromvehere"to carry," the same root asconveyandvector.Attention←attendere"to stretch toward" (ad-toward +tendereto stretch): to pay attention is to lean your mind toward something.Meme← Greekmimēma. Three roots, one sentence: we carry meaning only when we stretch toward it with language worth driving.

句型 · Sentence patterns

• Task 1 line chart: The line chart shows a steady rise from 2 ZB in 2010 to 34 ZB in 2018, with the steepest increase occurring between 2016 and 2018.

• Task 1 scatter: Overall, there is no clear positive correlation between the two variables; notably, [country] is an outlier with high X but low Y.

• Part 3 analogy: Just as a city grinds to a halt when clunkers block the lanes, so the mind loses clarity when vapid memes crowd out real language.

• Causal caution: What makes this trend misleading is that the upward line measures volume, not value.

• The correlative again: The more information we produce, the less meaning we seem to keep.

今日表达 TOP3 · Top 3 expressions

1. a poverty of attention — Herbert Simon's phrase: in an information-rich world, wealth of information means poverty of attention. 注意力贫困,今天整篇的题眼。

2. a clunker on the mind's highway — 脑子里开烂车,把小优的类比直接转成英语意象,口语 Part 3 极好用。

3. self-replicating sludge — 自我繁殖的污泥,指那些不生产意义、只生产副本的烂梗洪流。

一词多义 · 小心熟词生义 · Polysemy watch

1. traffic — today's sense: the flow of vehicles or web data (web traffic surged overnight). Another sense: dealings, often illicit (drug traffic, human trafficking). 别只想到"交通"。

2. host — today's sense: an organism that harbors a passenger (we become hosts of the meme). Another sense: the one who receives guests (she hosted the meeting). 别只想到"主持人"。

3. replicate — today's sense: to copy itself (memes replicate faster than facts). Another sense: to repeat an experiment (the lab replicated the result). 统计与生物双语境都高频。

4. hollow — today's sense: empty of real content (hollow words, hollow content). Another sense: a small valley (they lived in a hollow). 别只想到"山谷"。

5. noise — today's sense: unwanted sound or signal (too much noise online). Another sense: random variation in data (the sample carried some noise). 两个意思今天都撞上了。

6. compound — today's sense: to make worse by addition (the damage compounds daily). Another sense: a substance or a walled yard (a chemical compound). 别只想到"化合物"。

7. rate — today's sense: a ratio, a measure per unit (death rate per 100,000). Another sense: speed, or to judge (at a fast rate / five-star rated). 统计双语境易混。

8. line — today's sense: a plotted trend (a line chart). Another sense: a queue, a route, a script (wait in line / a bus line). 别只想到"队伍"。

注意 / Note: the four that bite hardest this week are traffic (not just 交通), host (not just 主持人), hollow (not just 山谷), rate (don't confuse with 速度). In the "brain-as-road" metaphor each one silently changes meaning; miss it and the whole analogy collapses.

学科短文 · Subject essay

Language is the vehicle of thought: why rotten memes clog the mind's roads

小优 handed me the cleanest theory of the week in two short lines: the brain wants comfort, so don't play rotten memes; traffic wants to flow, so don't drive clunkers. Read closely, this is not advice about politeness. It is a claim about architecture. Language is the vehicle of thought, the Latin vehere "to carry" sits inside the word. If the vehicle is a clunker, the thought never reaches its destination. You sit in gridlock inside your own head.

The economist Herbert Simon saw the bottleneck first, in 1971: "in an information-rich world, the wealth of information means a poverty of attention." Attention is the scarce fuel. Every meme is a car begging for that fuel, and the rotten ones are engineered only for speed of replication, not for where they arrive. Richard Dawkins, in 1976, named the unit: the meme, from Greek mimēma "that which is imitated." A healthy meme carries an idea worth copying, a clunker meme copies only itself.

Now the neuroscience, because the road metaphor is not only poetic. Donald Hebb, in 1949, gave us the law still printed in every textbook: neurons that fire together wire together. The cars that pass most often pave the road. If those cars are shallow, copied, outrage-optimized phrases, the brain physically lays down shallow lanes, and deep reading gets harder, not from laziness but from worn pavement. This is neuroplasticity, the brain remolding itself by rehearsal. The prefrontal cortex is what 小优 called the "wisdom dispatch center," the executive that should wave the green light only for cars going somewhere. Flood it with meme-noise and the dispatcher is overwhelmed, exactly like a city during rush hour.

Here is the bridge to the piece on traffic noise. The World Health Organization's 2018 Environmental Noise Guidelines link chronic road-traffic noise to cardiovascular disease, sleep loss, annoyance, and measurable cognitive impairment in children. External noise harms the body. Internal meme-noise harms the mind's road network by the same logic: a constant low signal that stops the dispatcher from ever getting quiet. We would never let a clunker spew exhaust on a real highway without protest. Yet we let vapid content idle, day and night, on the highway that is us.

The literal road confirms the metaphor. Does owning more cars make a country's roads deadlier? A naive reader plots car ownership against road deaths and expects an upward slope. The real scatter refuses to draw a neat line. Rich countries such as the UK, Japan and Germany have among the most cars per person, yet some of the lowest death rates. India owns the fewest cars but suffers the highest toll. The pattern is not a chain. A third, lurking variable, safer roads, stricter enforcement, fewer two-wheelers, may explain both columns at once. That is why charts mislead: not the numbers, but the eye that jumps from "together" on a page to "because" in the head. The brain's own highway falls for the exact same shortcut.

The chart below makes the trap visible at scale. Global data volume climbed from about 2 zettabytes in 2010 to 34 in 2018, a more-than-fifteen-fold rise in eight years. The line goes up, steeply. But the line measures volume, never value. Information multiplied; meaning did not follow. The more we produced, the less we seemed to keep, Simon's poverty of attention made literal. A clunker count went up, and we mistook the traffic for the trip.

词源小知识(回扣):vehicle ← Latin vehiculum "that which carries," from vehere "to carry," the same root as convey and vector. Attention ← attendere "to stretch toward." Meme ← Greek mimēma. Three roots, one sentence: we carry meaning only when we stretch toward it with language worth driving.

引导理解(从凉州看世界) · Seen from Liangzhou

Liangzhou Lotus Mountain, the Purple Mountain of Guzang, is where Li Zibiao once lived below, and where Liangzhou people still live today. Ancient Liangzhou was a true hinge on the Silk Road; meaning there travelled the road carrying real goods and a living lineage of learning. The bronze galloping horse of the Former Liang, that steed astride a swallow, bore craft and climate onward; the Liangzhou crimson dyeing pressed "Liangzhou's crimson, the finest under heaven" into silk; Li Zibiao, sailing to Naples, carried true scholarship, not self-looping images. Guzang Lying-Dragon City, seven li north to south and three east to west, was a Hexi metropolis where carts and thought truly crossed, never a screen looping empty copies. These are weight-bearing, sourced anchors of meaning, not rootless memes that only copy themselves. "Liangzhou's herds are the richest under heaven; Liangzhou's crimson is the finest under heaven", every line tied to a soil and a craft. Seen from Liangzhou, a real cultural flourishing lets meaning take root; today's digital road too often runs only hollow vehicles. The lesson is one: on the Silk Road or inside the skull, traffic flows only when the freight, and the language that carries it, has weight.

Look at it from Liangzhou, and my own case makes the line concrete. My 《凉州学之我见》8.0 is dense, even obscure, but it is not a hollow, rootless meme. 我写的这篇是晦涩的,却不是抽象的烂梗。 These complex thoughts are exactly what keep my vitality alive, practice after practice. 这些复杂的思考,会让我保持持续的活力。 A clunker meme and a hard piece of scholarship can both look "difficult" from far away, but one only copies itself while the other carries real freight, history, and a method. That is the whole difference between the empty screen and the road that once ran through 姑臧卧龙城.

艾宾浩斯复习 · Ebbinghaus review

Ebbinghaus review, the spaced-retrieval loop, old threads I am deliberately reconnecting today. First, the 09-28 health line chart on global adult obesity, 1975 to 2016: that drill was about reading direction and inflection, a line that bends. Today's datasphere line bends too, but the lesson is sharper, it measures volume, not value. Second, the 10-04 family grouped bar on ILO unpaid care work: that was two series side by side; today is one line and its acceleration, two ways of seeing the same data world. Third, the 09-19 maths scatter on PISA reading versus maths, positive correlation with the US outlier: that day taught correlation is not causation; today's traffic scatter teaches it again from the real road, and the meme piece teaches quantity is not quality, three guards against misreading. Fourth, the 09-23 transport root veh-, to carry: today "language is the vehicle of thought" drove that root straight from the road into the skull. 旧词回扣,新境即用,这本身就是迁移。

一嘴反应 · Snap response

Quick spoken drill, say it out loud before reading on: "If my brain is a road, what am I letting drive on it?" Then force one real sentence: "This meme is a clunker, I'm putting it in the ditch." Stupid, but it is yours, and that is the point. The dispatcher needs to hear your own voice, not an echo. A second one, from the bus: "More cars on the road does not mean more deaths, a safer system changes the whole picture." Both are 元认知 catches, say them slow, then speed up.

多语种句尾 · Multilingual sign-off

For the Friday multilingual extra, all secular. Spanish first: El ruido no es música — noise is not music, a line I kept hearing while the feed played the same laughing dragon on loop. Then Latin: Copia caret spiritu, a copy lacks spirit. A third pair, from the real road: Spanish Una gráfica no miente, pero quien la lee puede equivocarse (a chart does not lie, but its reader can err), and Latin Numerus non mentitur, sed qui numerat facile fallitur (numbers do not deceive, yet the one who counts easily slips). All four say what the brain-road metaphor said: a clunker that only repeats itself is not a journey, it is a stall, and a line that only counts volume is not a verdict on value. 小优的公路,今天用这几句收:噪声不是乐音,复制没有精神,图不撒谎但读图的人会看错,开你自己的车。

✍️ ✍️ 写作联动一(主线)· 看图写作 · Task 1 writing drill, line chart, volume is not value

① Grid selection: the topic "technology and media" crossed with a line chart. This chart reads "rate of change and acceleration," and it avoids the last three cycles (09-28 health line, 10-02 maths pie, 10-09 morning traffic scatter), locking onto today's "information inflation" theme.

② Data and source: Global Datasphere size in zettabytes, 2010 / 2012 / 2014 / 2016 / 2018 = 2 / 6 / 12 / 19 / 34, from IDC Data Age 2025 (sponsored by Seagate, Nov 2018). Real data, year ≤ 2019, with institution, indicator, year, and figures all verifiable.

③ Chart:

④ Task 1 prompt (150 words / 20 min):

The line chart shows the size of the global datasphere, measured in zettabytes, from 2010 to 2018. Overall, the volume grew dramatically, from 2 ZB to 34 ZB, a more-than-fifteen-fold increase. The most striking feature is the acceleration: the rise was modest between 2010 and 2014 (2 to 12 ZB), then steepened sharply after 2016, with the single largest jump occurring between 2016 and 2018 (19 to 34 ZB). In short, data creation did not merely grow, it compounded. (about 80 words: overview + key features + rate of change; grouping comparison does not apply, so focus on trend and inflection.)

Sentence patterns (from line-chart card 8):

• The line chart shows a steady / sharp increase from X to Y.

• The steepest rise occurs between A and B.

• Overall, the figure grew more than fifteen-fold.

• What makes this misleading is that the trend measures volume, not value.

Model answer notes (3–4 points): ① always open with an overview (the overall explosion); ② flag the acceleration (steepening after 2016); ③ give exact figures (2 → 34 ZB); ④ loop back to the theme with one line: the chart proves information grew, not that meaning grew.

⑤ Statistical aside (roadmap 2.3 line chart): a line chart reads trend and rate of change; the slope is speed. This line steepens late, which means compound growth (IDC estimates roughly 23% annual), not linear. The trap sits right here: the eye sees the final steep climb and feels "information just exploded," yet it climbed for eight years; the subtler error is reading it as "meaning rose too," volume ≠ value, the exact trap this whole piece dismantles. Read a line: first the direction, then the rate, then always ask, is this line counting "how much" or "how good"?

✍️ ✍️ 写作联动二(佐证)· 看图写作 · Task 1 writing drill, scatter plot, correlation is not causation

① Grid selection: the topic "transport" crossed with a scatter plot. This chart reads "direction and strength of a two-variable relationship, not causation," the sister trap of the "volume ≠ value" line above: more information ≠ more meaning, just as more cars ≠ more deaths.

② Data and source: passenger car ownership (cars per 1,000 people, 2018) against road traffic death rate (per 100,000 population, 2018), seven countries. Two sources: World Bank (cars per 1,000) + WHO GSRRS 2018 (road traffic death rate). Real data, both ≤ 2019, verifiable.

③ Chart:

④ Task 1 prompt (150 words / 20 min):

The scatter chart below shows the relationship between passenger car ownership (cars per 1,000 people, 2018) and road traffic death rates (per 100,000 population, 2018) in seven countries. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes.

Sentence patterns (from stats chart corpus, card 7 scatter + misleading charts):

• Overall, there is no clear positive correlation between the two variables.

• Notably, [country] is an outlier, with high X but low Y.

• With the exception of [country], nations with fewer cars tend to record higher death rates.

• This pattern suggests that a third, lurking variable may explain both.

Model answer notes: ① Overview: no simple positive correlation between the two variables; rich countries with many cars (UK, Japan, Germany) record the lowest death rates. ② Extremes: India owns the fewest cars (22 per 1,000) yet the highest death rate (22.6 per 100,000); the US owns the most (837 per 1,000) with a mid-level rate (12.4). ③ Groups: UK/Japan/Germany form a "high-car, low-death" cluster; Brazil/China/India form a "low-car, high-death" cluster. ④ The break: do not read causation; road-safety systems, enforcement, and vehicle mix are the lurking variables.

⑤ Statistical aside (roadmap 2.4 misleading charts): a scatter reads the direction and strength of a relationship, not causation. This one is non-linear and non-monotonic, rich countries with many cars yet few deaths, exactly breaking the "more cars must mean more deaths" intuition, and most tempting for cherry-picking or false causation. The iron rule of reading scatter: correlation ≠ causation, always ask whether a lurking variable sits in between. This is the same metacognitive muscle as the line chart's "more quantity ≠ more quality": never let the eye decide for the brain.
