I started the morning with a slightly silly question, the kind I ask while the kettle is still humming: what exactly is a Mac, and why do people get so attached to one? A Mac is simply Apple's line of computers, the notebooks and the desktop boxes, all on the same operating system, macOS. The thing that makes it a Mac is what sits under the lid. Since 2020 Apple has been fitting every Mac with its own processors, the M series, and that single move rewrote the whole story.

I was hooked at once, by something magical that could glow and think. The games I was truly obsessed with as a boy, though, were Warcraft and StarCraft; I only found out years later that both came from a company named Blizzard. Only as I grew older did I realise, oh, behind those games there is a whole layer of seriously complicated technology. Years later, in middle and high school back in 凉州（古凉州，今武威）, I devoured two computer magazines, 电脑迷 and 电脑爱好者, the ones that sometimes tucked a free CD-ROM inside, and I taught myself a surprising amount of computer science from those pages and discs. Both titles have since stopped print, and honestly I still look back on that era with real fondness.

When you look at who actually ships computers, Apple is not the giant people imagine. IDC counted the second quarter of 2025: Lenovo sent out 17.0 million, HP 14.1 million, Dell 9.8 million, and Apple 6.2 million, about 9.1 percent of the market. That is small next to Lenovo's nearly a quarter, yet Apple grew the fastest of the big names, up 21.4 percent in a single year. 榜首恰好是联想，而我人生第一台电脑也是联想，这条线绕了一圈又接上了。

There is fresh news too. The Verge reported that Apple Intelligence, the company's own AI system, is finally switching on in China with iOS 27.3, years after the rest of the world got it. As for cars, I have a soft spot for Tesla. A close friend drives a sleek Tesla Model Y and I'll admit I'm a little envious. The pattern I want to lock in is the what-cleft, the English way to put the spotlight on one idea: what + clause + is/was + focus.

• What makes a Mac a Mac is the chip Apple designed in-house.（让 Mac 成其为 Mac 的，是那块自研芯片。）

• What hooked me at age three was a Lenovo desktop glowing in a relative's living room.（三岁时钩住我的，是亲戚家那台发光的联想台式机。）

Two small rules. First, the verb after is can be a noun, a gerund, or a clause, but keep it short and concrete. Second, do not overload it; one what-cleft per paragraph is plenty, or it starts to sound like a slogan. A close cousin is the reason (that) ... is that ..., useful when you explain a why rather than a what, for instance the reason I never studied computer science was simply circumstance, not lack of love for it.

The quiet revolution inside a Mac, and a boy who never got over it.

For most of its life the Mac was a computer that simply ran different software, and that was the whole identity. What changed after 2020 was not the shell but the engine. Apple stopped buying processors from Intel and began fitting every Mac with its own M-series chips, built on the efficient design that had powered its phones for years. The word silicon here names the material of the chip; it comes from the Latin silex, flint, the hard stone our ancestors struck sparks from, and today the same root names the wafer a computer is etched onto.

My own story with computers began far earlier and far more humbly. The first machine I ever touched was a Lenovo desktop, glowing in a relative's room when I was three or four, still in nappies, and it hooked me for life. Standing on 凉州莲花山 (姑臧紫山) and looking back two thousand years, the story of Apple and its self-made chip sounds oddly familiar. 古凉州, the place we know as 武威 today, sat on the Silk Road, the great supply chain of its age, where the worth of a thing lay as much in who made it as in what it was. The bronze horse of the 前凉 Zhang Gui era, a stallion pinning a swallow beneath its hooves, was the ancients' proof that local hands could reach the very top; travelling merchants from afar would stop and marvel. Carved in the Northern Liang, the 天梯山 grottoes are called the cradle of China's cliff temples, and every fold of robe in the stone carries a generation of craftsmen's patience.

And here is the private thread, the one that started long before any of this. It was in this same 凉州 (古凉州, today 武威) that a schoolboy read 电脑迷 and 电脑爱好者 by lamplight, and it was at a relative's house, years before that, that a toddler in nappies first met a Lenovo desktop and fell quiet before the glow. A road well built lets able people travel far; a chip designed in-house lets a company answer only to itself. The lesson of 姑臧 was always the same: a place, or a person, prospers when it makes things others cannot. Apple's bet on its own silicon is that same bet in a thinner wrapper. Whether it is a trade route or a processor, the vital nerve has always rested in one's own hands, in camel trains and craftsmen then, in fibre cables and wafers now.

If I sometimes gild the road I didn't take, the one toward computer science, well, that too is just being human. Whoever walks away from the path he once wanted tends to paint that untaken road too golden; maybe that, in the end, is simply what life is.

There is a poem that says this better than I ever could. 《没有走过的路》 (The Road Not Taken) was written by the American poet Robert Frost in 1915 and gathered into his collection Mountain Interval (《山间低地》). On its face it is the story of a walker who took the road 'less traveled by' and swears that single turn made all the difference. But read it twice and the poem quietly turns on itself: the two forks were 'really about the same,' and it is only later, in the retelling, that we gild one path as the braver, wiser road. Frost's deeper point is sly: the choice itself may not have decided our fate at all, and it is the storyteller, not the road, who gilds it afterward. On its surface it tells of a road less travelled that changed a life; in truth it hints the choice itself may not have sealed our destiny, and the gold belongs to the teller, not the path.

That mirror fits my own old ache. I never enrolled in computer science, and for years I polished that unchosen road into something golden, a life of clean code and quiet genius I somehow felt owed. The poem reminds me the shine was mine to begin with, not the road's. Now, with AI models close at hand, the gate feels less shut and more like a path I can simply start walking. Tucking this poem into today's drill is a late echo for the child who once stared, spellbound, at a Lenovo desktop: the road you skipped was never the only one, and the life you are actually living is the one most worth telling well.
