福清市过去又被称作“番薯县”，意思是当地粮食产量极低，连饭都不够吃，只能种些番薯来果腹。
由于地少人多，从清朝起，福清人便大量下南洋，出国谋生。
其实，每个地方出现大量人口出国谋生的情况，都有其历史缘由。早期有人在国外有亲戚，便一批接一批地带人出去。
