“Seasonal rain falls while it's Grain in Ear; all over the plain, seedlings appear.” Grain in Ear, the ninth solar term of the twenty-four traditional Chinese solar terms, arrives with summer's warmth and agricultural busyness. To help children deeply understand the cultural connotation and scientific wisdom of this solar term, Grade 4 of XX Primary School recently carried out the interdisciplinary thematic activity “Busy Grain in Ear, Harvest in Sight”. The children traced traditions in cultural classes, unlocked nature's secrets through scientific exploration, recited classics in bilingual poetry gatherings, and savored the solar term with their taste buds, experiencing the charm of traditional Chinese culture with their hands and hearts.

Cultural Classroom – Understanding Grain in Ear
“What does Grain in Ear mean?” “Why is it called ‘Busy Planting’?” In the themed class, the teacher used vivid PPT and videos to tell the students about the origin, agricultural significance and traditional customs of Grain in Ear. From the romance of "Farewell to the Flower God" to the prayers of "An Miao", from the elegance of "Boiling Green Plums" to the joy of "Mud Fight", the students listened with great interest. After class, they divided into groups to look up information and made exquisite bilingual hand-copied newspapers, recording every detail of Grain in Ear in both Chinese and English, with rich illustrations and creative designs.

Scientific Exploration – Discovering Nature
What weather changes occur during Grain in Ear? Why does the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River enter the "plum rain" season? The students in the scientific exploration group became "little scientists". By observing temperature and humidity and consulting information, they drew mind maps of the relationship between Grain in Ear and astronomy, climate, and phenology. They also learned about the three phenological phenomena: “mantis eggs hatch, shrikes start to sing, and mockingbirds become silent”, and looked for mantises on campus. Most interestingly, the students imitated the ancient "Farewell to the Flower God" ceremony, weaving flower petals and willow twigs into garlands and tying them to tree branches, thanking the Flower God for the beauty of spring and hoping for more blossoms next year. The camera captured this beautiful moment.

Taste Buds – Savoring Grain in Ear
“Discussing heroes while boiling plums and wine” – Grain in Ear is the season when green plums ripen. The students in the creative handicraft group used ultra-light clay to make round green plums, golden ears of wheat, and various dough figurines – representing the grains and livestock in the "An Miao" custom. Some students also tried pickling green plums with rock sugar at home with their parents, making a refreshing summer drink. Tasting the "flavor of the solar term" made by themselves, the children's faces beamed with satisfaction.
