外语独白 · Foreign-language monologue
This morning the word education stopped looking like one word. I was looking at that table of spending, and it hit me that the English word carries two Latin ghosts. One is educare, to feed and bring up, like a mother rearing a child. The other is educere, to lead out, to draw a person out of themselves. 一个在喂,一个在领,完全两件事,却塞进了同一个词。
And today my focus is 地道, naturalness, so I am not collecting rare words. I am listening for the difference between a sentence that sounds like a textbook and one that sounds like me. She received a good education is fine, but she got a proper education sounds like a person talking. 一个 got、一个 proper,地道就藏在這种小词里。Nobody grades you on "got" in real life, but examiners can hear the difference in a second.
Hmm, "proper" 我上周还用错过,在餐厅说 "a proper coffee" 被朋友笑,说那是英式说法,意思就是"像样的"。今天拿来用正好:a proper education, a proper school. 小词一活,整个调子就松了。
And the reason I never get tired of any of this, the reason the foreign-language habit still feels worth it after all these years, is one sentence I have carried for a long time. Karl Marx, 1818 to 1883, wrote that a foreign language is a weapon in the struggle of life. 这句话是我自学的发动机,也是我反思时最常想起来的一句。A weapon, in that sentence, is not for hurting anyone, it is for winning a life that would otherwise stay shut to you. 斗争不是跟别人打,是跟自己的局限打。And it ties straight back to today's word: if a foreign language is a weapon, then education is the forge where that weapon gets made, and the making of it is educere, leading out, not educare, stuffing in. 我天天自己教自己,底下垫着的,就是这句名言。And here is the part I hold onto most tightly: learning a foreign language is not just a school subject, it is one of the most important paths of self-education there is, a way of teaching yourself, and that is exactly why I value it so much. 学外语就是自我教育非常重要的一条路,这一点我特别看重,因为没有人能替你把自己领出来,这事只能自己干。
So my little monologue today is not about knowing more. It is about not sounding like I swallowed a dictionary. When I say I went to school in a small town, the went to school is natural; if I say I pursued my education at an educational institution, I sound like a brochure. 两个都"对",但只有一个像人。That is the loss I am measuring today: not accuracy, but whether the English feels lived-in.
语法笔记 · Grammar notes
Three small points, all about sounding natural with education talk. First, education is uncountable. Say she has a good education, never ❌ "an education" unless you mean one specific course of study, and never ❌ "educations". Same family as information and advice, a lump, not a count.
Second, the verb patterns. We get/receive/pursuean education, and weeducatesomeone, but we do not ❌ "educate knowledge".Knowledgeis something yougain, acquire, broadenordeepen. The common learner slip islearn knowledge✘, which a native would never say; the clean version isgain knowledgeorlearn a lot.
Third, the present perfect for a state that started long ago and still matters: Compulsory schooling has existed here for over a century. Use it for background that frames the present. 别老用一般过去时讲制度,制度用现在完成时更"一直在"。
中式英语易错 · Chinglish traps
•学知识✘ → learn knowledge ✘ → ✅ gain / acquire knowledge. "Learn" takes a skill or a subject, not "knowledge" as a lump.
•提高知识✘ → improve my knowledge ✘ → ✅ broaden / deepen / expand my knowledge. Knowledge grows sideways and downwards, not "up".
•受教育→ not "accept education". Say ✅ receive an education / get an education. "Accept" means you took a gift someone offered.
•好学校→ not "good school" only. Say ✅ a decent school / a solid school / a proper school. "Good" is fine but flat; the others carry more texture.
•上课很认真→ not "I very serious in class". Say ✅ I paid attention in class / I was a diligent student. "Serious" about study is diligent or conscientious.
•考试考得好→ not "I tested well". Say ✅ I did well on the exam / I aced the test. "Test" as a verb about yourself sounds off.

今日新词 + 词根串联 · New words & roots
•educateˈedʒukeɪt: from Latin educare "to bring up, rear" (e- intensive + root of alere "to nourish") and overlapping with educere "to lead out" (e- + ducere "to lead"). The word never settled on one parent, which is why it means both feeding and leading.
•schoolskuːl: from Greek scholē "leisure, discussion, a place of learning", the same root as scholar and scholastic. The odd bit: scholē first meant free time, because learning was what you did with leisure. A school of fish is the same word by a different road, a shoal moving as one.
•pedagogyˈpedəɡɒdʒi: Greek pais "child" + agogos "leader" (from agein "to lead"), literally "child-leading". The ped- is the same as in pediatric; the agog is the same as in demagogue (leader of the people). Teaching was child-leading long before it was a profession.
•curriculumkəˈrɪkjələm: Latin "a running, a course", from currere "to run". Same root as current, course, concur. The syllabus is literally the track you run.
•disciplineˈdɪsəplɪn: from Latin disciplina "instruction, training", from discipulus "learner", which may tie to discere "to learn". A disciple is the same word; discipline once meant simply being a learner, before it meant being made to behave.
•literacyˈlɪtərəsi: from Latin littera "letter of the alphabet". Same root as letter, literate, illiterate. To be literate is to handle letters; computer-literate just extends the hand to machines.
•tuitiontjuˈɪʃn: from Latin tuitio "a watching over, protection", from tueri "to watch, guard". Its older sense was the guarding and guiding of a learner, which is why it still means both "instruction" and "the fee you pay to be guarded".
词源小知识(回扣):education 的双根(educare 喂 / educere 领)正是今天整篇的题眼。school ← Greek scholē "闲暇即学问";pedagogy ← pais "孩子" + agein "领";curriculum ← currere "跑";tuition ← tueri "看护"。一根线串下来:学校原是闲暇处,课程原是跑道,教书原是领路,而教育,原是喂大一个人、再领出一个人。

In education English each one quietly flips; miss it and the sentence says something you never meant.

Education is not one thing: two Latin ghosts and the hidden curriculum
The English word education hides a quarrel it never resolved. One parent is Latin educare, "to feed, to bring up, to rear", the word a nurse uses for a growing child. The other is educere, "to lead out, to draw forth", built from e- "out" and ducere "to lead". The first image is a hand that fills; the second is a hand that opens. Both got folded into one noun, and ever since, we have argued about which one school is for. The Romans who coined it never picked a side, which is why the word still wobbles between feeding minds and freeing them.
The tension runs through the whole history of schooling. In classical Athens, scholēmeant leisure, the free time a citizen spent in discussion, and only later slid into "a place of learning"; aschoolwas first what you did with your spare hours, not a building you were sent to. The medievaluniversitaswas a guild of teachers and learners, andcurriculumwas simply the track you ran, fromcurrere"to run". When Philip Jackson coinedthe hidden curriculumin 1968, he named the third thing schools teach without teaching: punctuality,排队, competition, the quiet lesson that the bell, not your curiosity, decides the hour. None of that is in the syllabus, yet all of it iseducationin theeducare sense, the shaping hand.
So 地道, in talking about learning, is not knowing rare words. It is feeling which ghost you mean. She was educated at home leans on the feeding, rearing sense; the teacher drew the answer out of her leans on the leading-out sense, and sounds like a person who knows the word's bones. A textbook says students acquire knowledge; a human says she got a proper education and never looked back. The second is no less precise, only more lived-in, and that lived-in quality is exactly what naturalness is made of.
词源小知识(回扣):education←educare(喂) +educere(领);school← Greekscholē"闲暇即学问";pedagogy←pais"孩子" +agein"领";curriculum←currere"跑";tuition←tueri "看护". 一根线:学校原是闲暇处,课程原是跑道,教书原是领路,而教育,原是喂大一个人、再领出一个人。

引导理解(从凉州看世界)· Seen from Liangzhou
Liangzhou Lotus Mountain, the Purple Mountain of Guzang, has watched people learn on this soil for two thousand years, and people still live and study below it today. The two ghosts of education both have a home here. The feeding hand is the Liangzhou Confucian Temple, today's Wuwei Confucian Temple, called the "Sage's School" and honoured as the foremost Confucian temple of the northwest, where for centuries the young of 古凉州 were reared in letters and ritual, the educare of a frontier scholar. The leading-out hand is the story of 李遵顼, who in 1203 topped the imperial examination as zhuangyuan, the highest scorer in the land, and in 1211 rose from the Western Capital of Liangzhou to take the throne, a "emperor made by the exam", the living proof that learning can draw a person clean out of a small place into history. Seen from Liangzhou, "education" was never flat: one root fed a child by the 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山), the other led a 状元 out of 古凉州 to the capital, and the saying "Liangzhou's herds are the richest under heaven, Liangzhou's crimson the finest under heaven" reminds us that this soil always measured a person by what they became, not just what they were fed. That is the lesson 地道 has been teaching all week: name the exact root, and the word stops being a brochure and becomes a life.

First, pull your weight came up on 10-04 family day, then again in the 10-10 work piece. Today it moves into education as "do your fair share of the learning". 同一个短语,从家里走到职场、再走进课堂,换了三个房间我还是接得上,这就是迁移。
Second, the 09-24 work table taught me to read a table's extremes and outliers before anything else. Today's spending table asks for exactly the same eye: find the top and bottom rows first, then talk about the middle. 读表先看两头,这是 09-24 攒下的手艺,今天又用上了。
Third, the 10-02 pie on world population drilled the rule that percentage is not absolute. Today's table is the same trap wearing an education suit: a 5.96% share of a small economy is not the same pile of money as 4.06% of a giant one. 占比不是钱,10-02 我就吃过这个亏,今天再敲自己一次。
Fourth, the 10-05 education line on tertiary enrolment is the same topic from the other side, access versus investment, two weeks apart, one story. 10-05 讲的是「多少人进得去」,今天讲的是「肯花多少钱」,同一个教育,两个切口。

Say it out loud before reading on: "Did school feed me, or did it lead me out?" Then force one real sentence with a phrase: "I got a proper education at a decent local school, even if the hidden curriculum taught me more than the books." Stupid, but it is yours, and that is the point. A second one: "Knowledge is not improved, it is broadened, and I keep forgetting that." Both are 地道 checks, say them slow, then speed up.

①Grid selection: the topic "education" crossed with a table. A table reads "many cases, one measure, find the extreme rows", and it avoids the last three cycles (10-08 pie, 10-09 line and scatter, 10-10 grouped bar), landing on government education spending as a share of GDP.
②Data and source: government expenditure on education as a percentage of GDP, ten countries, most recent available year for each. ④Task 1 prompt (150 words / 20 min):
The table below shows government spending on education as a percentage of GDP in ten countries, in the most recent year available for each. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes.
Sentence patterns (from the table chart card):
• The table compares government spending on education as a share of GDP across ten countries, in the most recent year available for each.
• Overall, the figure ranged from 4.0% in China to 6.0% in South Africa, with most economies clustering between 5.2% and 5.6%.
• The highest spenders, South Africa (6.0%) and the United Kingdom (5.9%), posted roughly one and a half times the share of the lowest, China (4.0%) and India (4.1%).
• Notably, China (4.0%) and India (4.1%) sat below the high-income economies, a reminder that large-population countries can still show a modest share.
Model answer notes (3–4 points): ① open with an overview (a modest spread, from 4.0% to 6.0%); ② give the extremes (South Africa and the United Kingdom at the top, China and India at the bottom); ③ group the middle (the United States, France, Germany all near 5.3%); ④ close with the caution, a percentage of GDP is a relative share, not cash in hand, so a high share in a small economy is not the same pile of money as a lower share in a giant one, and note the years differ across rows.
⑤Statistical aside (table + share is not cash): a table packs many cases into one measure, so the job is to read across and catch the extreme rows and the spread, never to list every cell. The trap sits in the unit: "% of GDP" is a relative share, not an absolute amount, so South Africa's 6.0% and China's 4.0% tell you about priorities, not about how many desks money bought. This is percentage is not absolute from 10-02, back in an education suit: never read a share as if it were a stack of banknotes. One extra wrinkle worth flagging, the years differ across rows, a real feature of cross-country data that a careful writer names in the overview. (Table chart kernel per 路线图 2.4: multi-dimensional comparison, catch the key rows and the outlier.)
