️ ️ 外语独白

I woke up thinking about family, the kind of lazy Sunday thought that needs no alarm. We were talking earlier about how Chinese people tack 老 or 小 onto a surname to signal respect or closeness, and that little habit sent me circling back to the bigger system underneath: the actual words for relatives. 说真的,我们中国的亲戚称呼,精密得有点吓人,比那对老和小深得多。

When I was a child back in 凉州(古凉州,今武威), our family gatherings were enormous. I was genuinely impressed, the sort of impression that sticks, and to this day I cannot tell you how many relatives we actually had.

我奶奶那一辈倒门儿清,谁是谁、该叫什么,她一张嘴就对,像背一本自家的人才谱。Me, the kid, just stood there bewildered: this man is 爷爷's 弟弟's 儿子, so is he 堂叔 or 堂伯? I lost the thread completely before the soup was even served.

The fascinating part, the bit worth drilling, is that Chinese does not lump them together the way English does. A father's brother is split by age: older is 伯, younger is 叔. A father's sister is 姑, a mother's brother is 舅, a mother's sister is 姨. English collapses most of this into one word, aunt or uncle; we keep the bloodline, the side, and the birth order all baked into the name. 这种精密,其实是一张关于"谁和谁才真正算一家人"的地图,不是随便叫叫。

And yet, for all the confusion that map caused me as a kid, two relatives on my mother's side taught me more than the map itself. The first is my 姥爷, my maternal grandfather. He and my 爷爷, the paternal one, were both alumni of the 古凉州(今武威)normal school, two men of the same schooling a generation apart.

What I remember is the small stuff. At New Year we cleaned the windows and did the chores; if my table manners slipped I got what the family called a 筷诫, a chopstick admonition, gentle but firm. He would toss me a pile of books and once made me copy our 凉州 Yang-family genealogy (家谱) by hand. I no longer recall what the words meant; it hardly mattered. Those tiny demands accumulated into habits, and the habits into a discipline that shaped me far more than any single lesson.

The second is my 二舅母, my second maternal uncle's wife. She never picks a fight; she steers around fuss and keeps clear of other people's quarrels. Looking back, that is the quiet wisdom of someone who is 入世而修, engaged with the world yet cultivating herself, a sort of urban hermit.

She once let slip her own study trick, probably having long forgotten it: when she was learning 速记, shorthand, she set herself one hard rule, memorize one 成语, one four-character idiom, every single day, to deepen her learning. That clumsy-looking persistence is, I now see, the very footnote to how she runs a household; my 二舅's life and work stay orderly precisely because she holds it all up behind him.

Then comes the Spring Festival, and the gap really shows. Every New Year I feel it: a foreign friend's brain simply cannot map our sprawling web of 七大姑八大姨, those 'seven aunts and eight uncles' who are in fact a precise roster of cousins once, twice, even thrice removed. English gets off lightly. To an English speaker, the whole cast collapses into a handful of words: mother, father, uncle, aunt, grandfather, grandmother, and maybe brother, sister, nephew, niece. That is almost the entire toolkit. Worse still, in a relaxed family mood they often go lazy and just call each other by first name, as if the whole taxonomy were optional. 懒死算了,可我们这边,差一个字就是两房人。

So how do you ever explain our map to them? The trick that works best is simple: give the English umbrella term first, then add one qualifier. Say 'uncle', and that single word already covers 伯, 叔, 舅, 姑父 and 姨夫 at once; then tag on who he is: 'uncle on my father's side, the older one.' Cousins work the same: 'cousin' swallows both 堂 and 表, and you only sharpen it when you must, 'my paternal cousin, older.' The precision is not lost; it is just deferred. 先抛大类,再补一句"是谁家的谁",老外就能接住。

So my little drill today: can I walk through that map in English without muddling paternal and maternal? 试一把,待会儿看自己顺不顺,顺便把小时候那本数不清的亲戚谱,用外语重新理一遍。

语法笔记

The pattern I want to lock in is used to for childhood states and repeated past habits, the natural way to say "我小时候总是/曾经".

• I used to get completely lost counting relatives at every family dinner.(我小时候每次家宴数亲戚都数懵。)

• My 奶奶 used to name every cousin twice removed without blinking.(我奶奶过去总是不眨眼地叫出每一个远房表亲。)

Two small rules.

First, used to takes the bare infinitive and signals something that is no longer true now; do not say used to do for a habit that still continues.

Second, the negative and question forms are didn't use to / did you use to, not usedn't in ordinary speech, which sounds stiff. A close cousin is the past continuous for atmosphere: back then the house was always overflowing with kin, which paints the scene rather than the habit.

中式英语易错

• ❌ My big family has many relatives. → ✅ My extended family is so large I long ago lost count of the relatives.("大家庭"用 extended family;"数不清"用 lost count,比 big 地道。)

• ❌ My father's sister is my aunt. → ✅ My father's sister is my paternal aunt, what we call 姑姑.(aunt 在中式英语里太笼统,英文也要分清 paternal/maternal。)

• ❌ My mother's brother is my uncle. → ✅ My mother's brother is my maternal uncle, my 舅舅.(同理,母系舅父单列。)

• ❌ I very remember my childhood. → ✅ I still vividly remember those sprawling family gatherings.(very 不能修饰 remember;" vividly" 接记忆更自然。)

• ❌ He is my cousin brother. → ✅ He is simply my cousin.(cousin 本就涵盖男女;cousin brother 是南亚英语,雅思里别用。)

• ❌ Our family is very big. → ✅ Ours is a sprawling, three-generation household.(sprawling 比 very big 有画面,"几世同堂"用 three-generation household。)

学科短文

The most precise map of kin on earth, and a child who could not read it.

No language maps family with quite the finesse of Chinese. Where English keeps aunt and uncle as blunt instruments, Chinese splits the family tree by four axes at once: lineal versus collateral, paternal versus maternal, elder versus younger, and whether the link runs through a man or a woman. The classical frame is the 九族, the nine generations counted up and down from oneself: 高祖、曾祖、祖、父、己、子、孙、曾孙、玄孙. Around it sat the 五服, the five grades of mourning cloth that measured exactly how close the bond was.

A father's elder brother is 伯, the younger one 叔; the father's sister is 姑, the mother's brother 舅, the mother's sister 姨. Cousins are not cousins: those through a father's brother are 堂, those through any sister or the mother's side are 表.

The vocabulary is not decoration. It is a census of obligation, encoding who owes whom what, and historically it grew because the 宗族, the patrilineal clan, organized land, name, and memory for millennia.

This precision is, in the end, a window onto a society built around lineage. The word 族 itself means clan; 宗 means the main stem of that clan. When a language keeps a separate term for a maternal uncle and a paternal uncle, it is quietly recording that the two men stood in different relations to property, ritual, and care. Anthropologists call such a system a descriptive kinship terminology, and China's is among the most finely graduated anywhere. A child surrounded by it, as I was in 凉州(古凉州,今武威), feels the system before understanding it: the names arrive faster than the logic.

This precision, moreover, is not uniform across the Chinese-speaking world. The dialects of the 河西 corridor, including the speech of 凉州(古凉州,今武威), redraw the very same family tree with their own labels: a father may be called 爹爹 while the word 爸爸 is reserved for a younger uncle, and maternal grandparents take the prefix 外 as 外爷爷 and 外奶奶. Linguists call this 同名异实, one word pointing to different relatives across dialect zones. A dialect is not 'broken Mandarin'; it is its own complete, internally consistent map of kin.

词源小知识(词根与古形)

The characters carry their own history. 父 (fù, father) in oracle bone script looks like a hand gripping an axe, the figure of authority in the early household; 母 (mǔ, mother) shows a woman with two marks for the breasts, the one who nurses. Birth order rode on a four-term set, 伯仲叔季: 伯 the eldest, 仲 the second, 叔 the third, 季 the youngest, still alive in phrases like 伯仲之间.

姑 (gū, father's sister) joins 女 with 古; 舅 (jiù, mother's brother) and 姨 (yí, mother's sister) each mark the mother's side distinctly.

亲 (qīn) means close or intimate, and 戚 (qī) means relatives; put them together and 亲戚 simply names the people near to you by blood or marriage. 族 (zú), clan, and 宗 (zōng), the main stem, together name the structure that the whole vocabulary serves.

专题节 · 凉州方言里的亲戚叫法 · 称呼与指代

The standard map is already precise, but here is the twist that makes it personal. Step into 凉州(古凉州,今武威)and the local speech redraws the very same family tree. As a child I heard words at the table that did not match the textbook, and that small mismatch is exactly what linguists study.

• 父亲 father → 爹爹 (diēdie) / 老子 (lǎozi). 老子 is the everyday call for father across the 河西 belt, and it sets a neat 同名异实 trap of its own: in Putonghua 老子 is a rude first-person ("your father" = an arrogant I), yet in 凉州 speech it means the man who raised you. One pair of characters, two opposite jobs: exactly the sort of mismatch a child has to learn at the table.

• 祖父 paternal grandfather → 爷爷;祖母 paternal grandmother → 奶奶.

• 外祖父 maternal grandfather → 外爷爷 (wài yéye);外祖母 maternal grandmother → 外奶奶 (wài nǎinai). 凉州话 keeps an old layer: maternal elders take the prefix 外, an ancient mark still alive in daily speech. This is the most local fingerprint of all.

• 曾祖父 great-grandfather → 太爷;曾祖母 great-grandmother → 太太 (careful: in dialect 太太 is a great-grandmother, not a wife).

• 伯父 father's elder brother → 大爹 / 大老子;his wife 大妈.

• 叔父 father's younger brother → 叔老子.

• 姑母 father's sister → 姑妈;a parent's younger sister → 娘娘 (niāngniang).

• 舅父 mother's brother → 舅舅;姨母 mother's sister → 姨妈 / 姨娘.

• 连襟 husbands of sisters → 挑担;妻子 wife → 婆姨 / 婆娘;丈夫 husband → 爷们 / 外前人。

One frame sits behind every term on that list, and naming it makes the whole map click. Chinese kinship sorts relatives into 内 (nèi, the inside) and 外 (wài, the outside). 内戚 (nèiqī) are the blood clan, the 本家 and 宗亲 who share the father's surname and stem: the 爷爷, 奶奶, 伯, 叔, 姑 and the 堂 branch that all run through the paternal line.

外戚 (wàiqī) are the relatives one gains by marriage, the affine line that joins from outside: a wife's people, a husband's people, and the maternal 外爷爷 and 外奶奶 we just met, where the prefix 外 is the very mark of the married-in side. The idea reaches back to the court. 《史记·外戚世家》opens on the line 自古受命帝王及继体守文之君,非独内德茂也,盖亦有外戚之助焉, that founding emperors and their heirs ruled not by their own virtue alone but with the help of 外戚, the consort clans. What was an imperial observation reads, in the dialects of 凉州(古凉州,今武威), as a kitchen-table fact. A family keeps two lists, the blood and the wedded, and it knows exactly which side every name falls on. This is the same split 小优's own family used to sort relatives: the 本家 who carry the surname, and the 外戚 who arrived by marriage and stayed.

• 丈夫的哥哥 husband's elder brother → 阿伯子 (ābózi) / 大伯子。凉州 nuance worth noting: the younger brother's wife calls him 哥哥 to his face, while 阿伯子 is the term used behind his back. The word is no novelty, 明 洪楩《清平山堂话本·快嘴李翠莲记》already has 翠莲 snap 阿伯三个鼻子管, and 清 翟灏《通俗编》traces 妇人呼夫之兄为伯 back to the Tang.

A 凉州 folk rhyme plays on the very term:

上山里打下的梅花鹿,下山里打下的野狐;

婆家里偎下的阿伯子,娘家里偎下的姐夫。

And a local saying runs 小公公大阿伯子, a wry note on who stands where in the household. The same child who heard 爹爹 and 外奶奶 at the table also grew up hearing these rhymes.

• 武威(古凉州)市下辖的三县一区方言互相影响,but the influence is uneven. The broad pattern runs like this: 凉州话 spreads outward to the surroundings, 古浪 and 天祝 river valleys have stayed connected for ages, while 民勤 keeps a stronger independence. In the past, poor transport meant these three counties and one district hardly met in speech; now that roads open up, 武威 people grow closer and the dialects begin to blend.

• 民勤(古凉州辖县)话, within this web, is still its own distinct branch, and it ranks kin by strict birth order. For the father's brothers, a 伯父 or 叔父 becomes 大爹 (大伯), then 二爹 / 二佬, 三爹 / 三佬 down the line, and the youngest 叔父 is often just 叔老子. Their wives follow the same count: a 婶婶 is 大妈, 二妈, 三妈, called by her husband's rank. Maternal grandparents are 外爷 and 外奶奶, a leaner cut of the 凉州 外爷爷 / 外奶奶. Even in-laws get local labels: a son-in-law calls his 岳父 姨夫 and his 岳母 姨娘, or 外父 and 外母; a 舅妈 is 舅嬷 / 舅麽. The husband-side siblings keep the words we met above, with 阿伯子 for the husband's elder brother and 小叔子 for his younger brother, while 连襟 call each other 挑担. None of this is broken Mandarin; it is the same kinship logic, carved with a local chisel, one that the three counties and one district of 武威(古凉州)keep sharpening together.

• 兄弟 (xiōngdì) is where the standard map and the local one truly part ways. In Putonghua the word usually means "younger brother," but in 凉州 speech it spreads far wider. It can total all your brothers, older and younger together; it can single out just the 弟弟; it can address any younger person who is not even kin; and most often it hardens into a habitual term of address, rather like calling a peer 哥们. The line between "my brother" and "my buddy" simply dissolves.

This looseness is not a 凉州 quirk alone. The same free play runs through 明清白话, the written vernacular of the Ming and Qing, still audible in 《西游记》. There the word swings across the whole range: a woodcutter says 再无兄弟姊妹,只我一人, using 兄弟 for blood brothers among siblings; the dragon king 敖钦 rallies 我兄弟们,点起兵, meaning his comrades rather than his kin; 二郎真君 asks 兄弟们,赶到那厢不见了, addressing his band; 美猴王 keeps 六个义兄弟, sworn brothers by oath; and 行者 calls 八戒 兄弟啊,这个功劳算你的, pure peer-to-peer buddy talk. One word, four social distances.

The point for our drill: 凉州 兄弟 is a living echo of that 明清白话 layer, still spoken where the novel only wrote it. A dialect does not throw the old words away; it keeps right on wearing them.

• 民勤(古凉州辖县)话 carries the same ancient layer even further, into the pronouns. Take 彼 (běi in the local reading). In classical Chinese 彼 means "the other side, the opponent," the second person inside 知己知彼,百战不殆 from 《孙子兵法》. In 民勤 dialect, though, 彼 loosens into a flexible pronoun that can stand for the first, second, or third person, whoever the moment needs. Picture the scene as a way to hear it: traveling 民勤 men meet far from home, each carrying his own dry rations, too polite to eat another's food. To break the deadlock one might say 彼不吃彼的,彼也不吃彼的, which unwraps as: I won't eat yours, you won't eat his, he won't eat mine, so let each simply eat his own. Three 彼, three different people, one word doing the work of I, you, and he. For IELTS the lesson rhymes with the kinship map: the right word is a matter of which speech community you happen to stand in.

So the same child who could not keep 堂 and 表 straight now had a second map to learn, one where 太太 could mean a great-grandmother rather than a wife. Linguists call this 同名异实: one word, different relatives across dialects.

For IELTS the takeaway is plain: the right word depends on which speech community you stand in, just as 堂 versus 表 depends on which side of the family you mean. Add 兄弟, which in 凉州 can mean a blood brother, a sworn brother, or just a buddy, and 彼 in 民勤, which can be I, you, or he. The dialect does not only rename the relatives; it redraws the very words for brother and for the other person.

⚡ ⚡ 一嘴反应训练

• Q: Do you come from a big family?

A: I did. Growing up in 凉州(古凉州,今武威), our extended family was so large that as a child I genuinely lost count of the relatives.

• Q: Why does Chinese have so many terms for relatives?

A: Because the language keeps the bloodline, the side, and the birth order all in the name. English collapses it to aunt or uncle; we don't.

• Q: Who kept track of everyone in your family?

A: My 奶奶. She could name every distant cousin twice removed without blinking, while I stood there completely lost.

• Q (Part 3 深度讨论): Some say modern cities are eroding the extended family. Do you agree?

A: Partly. The data backs it: average household size falls as cities grow, and three generations under one roof get rarer. But the names survive even when the roof doesn't. A family can shrink and still know exactly who is 堂 and who is 表. The map outlasts the house.

• 拉丁:Cognatio multa, nomina non confusa.(亲族虽多,称呼不乱。)

• 西语:Aunque haya muchos parientes, los nombres no se confunden.(纵有诸多亲戚,名号也不混。)

• 日语:親戚が多くても、呼び方は乱れない。(しんぞく が おおくても、よびかた は みだれない / shinzoku ga ōkutemo, yobikata wa midarenai;「呼び方」yobikata=称呼、叫法,回扣 term of address / what you call them)

• 英:Many kin, but the names stay in order.

看图写作(Task 1)

Task 1 写作任务:The chart below shows the average household size, measured in persons per household, across selected world regions and the world as a whole in 2024. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes.

本期图型对应句型(横向条形图):

• Sub-Saharan Africa had by far the largest households, averaging 5.2 people per household.

• Europe sat at the opposite end, with just 2.3 people per household.

• The world average of 3.5 concealed a wide spread between the regions.

• Asia, at 3.8, came closest to but still above the global mean.

范文要点:

1. Overview:区域差距极大,撒哈拉以南非洲(5.2)最高,欧洲(2.3)最低,全球均值 3.5 藏在中间、掩盖了分化。

2. Key features:

Standing on 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山)and looking down at the town where I learned the names of kin, the Chinese obsession with precise kinship terms stops looking quaint and starts looking like policy. 古凉州, the place we know as 武威 today, sat on the Silk Road, a crossing where peoples met and married, and where knowing exactly who was 堂 and who was 表 was never an idle game. A few valleys south of the city, in 阳晖谷, lie the tombs of the 吐谷浑 royal clan, with 弘化公主 among them, a Tang princess married into a steppe house so that two peoples could call each other kin rather than strangers. The vocabulary of relatives, seen that way, was also a vocabulary of alliance.

And here is the private thread, the one that started long before any of this. It was in this same 凉州(古凉州,今武威)that a child stood bewildered at a family table too crowded to count, while his 奶奶 named every cousin without effort. 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山) Footnote: 李自标 (1760 to 1828) grew up at the foot of this very mountain, later studied at the Chinese college in Naples and served as interpreter for the 1793 Macartney embassy, a man who carried the names of his homeland across the world. A boy who could not keep his own relatives straight, and a man who carried his hometown's name to the ends of the earth: both are children of the same 凉州, where family and road were never separate things. And the names he heard at that crowded table were not only textbook Chinese but the local 凉州话 as well, 外奶奶 and 爹爹 and 挑担, a dialect map laid right over the standard one, where 兄弟 could mean a buddy as easily as a brother and 彼 could mean I as easily as you.

Why does 凉州(古凉州,今武威)hold on to so many old words at all? This was 古雍州, the land of 姑臧, the gateway of the 河西走廊, once saluted as 通一线于广漠,控五郡之咽喉 and a former political, military, economic and cultural hub of the northwest. Set deep inland, its speech changed slowly, and so it kept a thick layer of words from 上古, 中古 and 近代 Chinese that had faded elsewhere. A 凉州 saying still calls the stomach a 皮袋: 娃娃吃上长人材,老汉吃上楦皮袋, the young grow on it, the old just stuff the bag. The same old layer floats through the daily tongue: 白生生 describes something very white, 起场 means to bring in the wheat at harvest, and 七雀 is still read qì qiǎo, an ancient pronunciation frozen in place. The Republican-era scholar 李鼎超, spurred by the fact that even 樵夫牧竖 still spoke the polished words of the ancient courts, compiled the 《方言志》, a dialect gazetteer whose entire format follows 章太炎's 《新方言》; the work stands as a linguistics monograph of real academic value. The 凉州学 scholar 王继中, in his 《凉州方言词语汇释》, traces many such words back to the classical vernacular of 《金瓶梅》 and 《水浒传》.

And this is no quaint trivia. The study of dialect words is core business for Chinese lexicography and lexical history, and a foundation stone of 近代汉语 research; to study 凉州话 (the speech of 武威 today) is to read a living archive of the language. The kinship and calling terms we listed above are exactly that old layer, simply wearing local clothes.

The 存古 does not stop at kin terms. Scholars who comb the 武威 (古凉州) dialect find old words scattered through daily life: a firstborn child is a 头䭭子 (䭭, an old character for 'first birth'), a beloved child a 崽娃子, a street peddler a 货郎子. The speech of 武威 belongs to the 河西 corridor branch of the northwest Mandarin family, and within that web the city speech and the three-county speech differ, mostly in sound. That split is the living proof of the uneven mutual influence across the three counties and one district we noted above: 凉州话 spreads, 古浪 and 天祝 stay linked by their river valleys, 民勤 keeps its distance. To study these words is to do 近代汉语 research on living ground; the dialect is the archive, still speaking.

The care is not new. 凉州 (古凉州) has a long line of scholars who took its speech seriously: 张澍 in the Qing, his pupil 李铭汉 who ran the 雍凉书院, and later 李鼎超 whom we met above, each turned to phonology and exegesis to pin the local tongue to the written record. The still-living 王继中 carries that line forward in 《凉州方言词语考释》 and 《凉州方言词语汇释》. Even the modern linguist 周有光 saw the point: a society needs both a common tongue and its dialects, the one for distance, the other for roots. To keep 凉州话 alive is not nostalgia; it is to keep a working archive of the language open.

For a reader who wants that old layer made lively rather than scholarly, a 2025 book by the 凉州(古凉州,今武威)writer 樊加永 is a pleasant next step. 《凉州遇见〈西游记〉》 (Dunhuang Literature and Art Press) threads sixty short essays through one striking seam: the dialect words, folk customs and farm rhythms of 凉州 that still surface inside 《西游记》, five hundred years after the novel was written. To hear a 凉州 grandparent say 滚水 for 'boiling water' and then meet the same word on the lips of a character in 《西游记》 is to watch the archive step off the page. It is exactly the kind of book that turns a dry word-list into a living hometown, and I would happily put it in anyone's hands who wants to feel how deep the dialect runs.

For the reader who wants the scholarly spine rather than the story, 王继中's 《凉州方言词语汇释》 is the book to keep on the desk. It is the reference work that pins the living 凉州 tongue to the classical record, the one I would press into the hands of anyone ready to go past the anecdote and into the archive.

The chart up above tells a colder version of the same story. Where my 奶奶's generation kept a sprawling web of kin under one roof, the world's average household has shrunk to 3.5 and keeps shrinking, cities pulling the young away to live alone. Yet the names survive even when the roof does not. A family can shrink and still know precisely who is 堂 and who is 表; the map outlasts the house. Whether it is a Silk Road clan or a single-person flat, the question of who counts as kin is the question of how we choose to belong. My childhood confusion, it turns out, was just an early lesson in a very old Chinese art: naming the people who are yours.

The teaching of those two elders on my mother's side, my 姥爷 and my 二舅母, I still hold clearly. And here is the twist the kinship map alone cannot show. Rising economic status did not, for me, automatically bring a 'modernization' or a 'liberation' of values; in some dimensions it did the opposite, deepening a quiet allegiance to traditional values. People talk constantly now about 原子化, social atomization, the lonely individual cut loose from the clan.

Yet the more I see, the more I turn back toward traditional 宗法, the old clan ethics of obligation and order. Watch the high earners and a pattern appears: the richer the household, the more it treats 'family' as a precise social organization. Sustaining real wealth, it turns out, needs not one person's frantic sprint but a family system running steadily, generation to generation. Relatives do split into 内 and 外, the inside and the outside: the same-surname paternal blood on one side, the maternal, the wife's people, the marriage-linked on the other, the whole web the old texts named 戚畹. To move through that web with grace is a skill I have come to admire deeply.

I have met many rich men whose fortunes did not last; a single gust of wind, as the saying goes, sweeps it all away. My own turn toward 凉州 culture and 凉州学 began with exactly these puzzles of real life, and only later did the reading start to answer them. The old confusion clears a little now, a flash of 豁然开朗, and with it a re-seeing of rules, family tradition, collaboration, risk, and inheritance. Which leaves the question that started it all, the one I now put to you and to myself: as atomized individuals, what are we to do?
