Tune: Meeting in Delight

—During a journey to Xincheng, Yizheng, 1947

Paddling sound, pole shadow, water waves,

Stone bridge piers,

The springtime watertown is aglow with broad bean flowers.

Long is the board,

Small the riverside,

Where a girl launders,

In trousers green and a coat red, said to be newlywed.

Tune: Dreamlike Song

—Maxipu, Yuanling, 1949

East wind leaves no remnant snow lain,

In April every village is dying for rain,

Every heart burns in pain.

Suddenly clouds on hill’s top gain,

Oh rain!

Oh rain!

Cleansing a thousand households’ pain.

Tune: Partridge Sky

—A self-encouraging poem written upon university graduation, 1955

Down the ditch flows the stream clean and clear,

Twisting and turning without a look in the rear,

Her size expands along her journey all-inclusive,

Her bosom opens for fishes to swim free of fear.

Heart in peace, mind without care,

Sands form into an islet unaware—

A model for lifetime scholarly research to follow:

Do what you can, but never ask how you fare.

Tune: Song of a Southern Country

—Outside the city of Jiangling, Hubei, 1964

An empty tower looms in the wilderness,

The moon shines on withered boughs in woeful loneliness.

People long gone, the yard is a scene of dilapidation,

Chirp, chirp,

Only the sound of insects persists in light and darkness.

Life in this world is like a boat’s race,

East or west, follow the water at a slow pace.

Prosperity in the state of Chu is but a dream,

Hush, hush,

Fishing songs upon the river make autumn so nice.

Tune: Treading on Grass

—Preparing a manuscript at Peking University Library, 1987

Rules and regulations, Rumors and gossips,

Away with the wind they pass.

A busy man am I in the tower of books,

Flowers flying outside escape my notice.

Pomposity I care not, Precept my only compass,

All efforts ready to mass.

Clear water springs from deep mountains, after

A million times’ sifting by sands and stones perforce.

Tune: Magnolia in Shortened Form

—Commemorating the 36th wedding anniversary in Sanya, Hainan, 1994

When young, boundless was the sky over sea,

Affectionate was the land nursing me.

Boarding a boat for a trip not to return,

Waves surging, I saw, fragrant islet lie on every turn.

In old age gains and losses will be clear,

As tide falls and rises year after year.

A bout of autumn rain, a puff of wind,

North and south are the same as west and east to a broad mind.

A Seven-character Regulated Verse

—A self-account on the 50th anniversary of my teaching career & 75th birthday, 2005

The whole mountain was dyed red by autumn frost, Peak after peak I climbed for a view of leaves radiant.

In old time a land of sand towards desert vast,

Now with .owers clustering the road is vibrant.

Labor is not lost on years’ hard toil,

I smile at past events in retrospect.

Grey-templed and immune to evil tongues,

I spurn my horse against wind from the west.

Tune: Partridge Sky

—Upon completion of The Complete Poetry of Li Yining, 2017

Alone I sit in the study, broad is earth and sky,

I open the window, the world meets my eye.

The crescent moon on hill’s top hurries away, Leaving pines alone in cold nights standing high.

Composition is easy,

Solution hard to come by.

Some in distress sigh, some in comfort lie.

Poems involve more than sentimental lay,

But the wellbeing of every household far and nigh.
