S40作为星舰V3第二艘飞船，经过114天建造组装后，于5月2日转运至梅西测试场，5月3日、4日完成两次低温测试。如果IFT-12中S39达成主要测试目标，按计划S40执行IFT-13，将成为第一艘飞往低地球轨道，并尝试原位塔捕回收的飞船。
