1950年10月，北京市二届三次各界人民代表会议，有人提案建议在天安门前建立毛泽东大铜像。
毛泽东看到提案后，给周恩来写下批语：“周总理：不要这样做。”
毛泽东一贯反对为自己修建铜像，同年5月，沈阳提议铸造他的铜像，他也曾批示：“铸铜像影响不好，故不应铸”，体现他反对个人崇拜的态度。
