Collective memory and the making of culture

The French sociologist Maurice Halbwachs argued in the 1920s that memory is not only personal; it is also social. He named this "collective memory", the shared past a group keeps alive through stories, rituals, and places. In this view, a culture is less a fixed list of customs than a living memory that a community rebuilds every generation. When people walk an old town or repeat a festival, they are not copying the past; they are re-enacting a memory that binds them together. The word "memory" itself comes from the Latin memor, meaning mindful, the same root behind commemorate, to keep something in mind on purpose. For anyone learning a culture, the real task is not to memorise facts, but to enter a memory larger than oneself.
