Right, today I'm going to talk about a teacher who had a real influence on me.

Her name was Ms. Li, and she taught us how to read history, not just memorise dates.

她教我们怎么读史料，不是光背年代。

She always said history is not about reciting facts — it's about learning to ask questions.

她说历史不是背事实，而是学会提问。

So instead of asking us to repeat what the book said, she encouraged us to question the sources.

That completely changed the way I look at the past.

I remember one particular lesson about local history — the Hexi Corridor, where my hometown is.

The roots of "education" and leading the mind out

The word "education" comes from Latin e- (out) and ducere (to lead). So education literally means "to lead out" the mind, not to pour answers in. The history teacher who told us to question the sources was practising exactly this. In Liangzhou, anciently called Wuwei, this idea is old: scholars taught students not just to recite, but to ask why. To educate is to draw a person outward, toward questions bigger than any single book.
