I never liked running. As a kid I was the one who faked a stomachache to skip the mile run at school. But lately I have been doing something I actually look forward to: a short bodyweight session in the morning, what some people call animal flow, copying the way animals move, bears, crabs, frogs.
So here is my routine now. I get up, and before I touch my phone, I do about twenty minutes of movement. Push-ups, squats, some floor work that feels silly but wakes the whole body. I have been keeping this up for maybe two months. (keep up 这个词组我老想说 continue,但其实 keep up 更口语,keep up a habit)
What changed? Not my weight, honestly. What changed is my stamina. I used to run out of breath climbing three flights of stairs; now I take them without thinking. The word for that staying power is endurance, or stamina.
And the nicer part: it spills into study. A moving body seems to free the tongue. On mornings I train, my English monologue flows better, fewer dead stops. (这点不是迷信,后面学科短文会讲有氧怎么改大脑) Anyway, the point is small, daily, boring movement compounds. Just like vocabulary.

• I keep showing up even when I don't feel like it.(keep showing up = 一直出现、不缺席)
• She kept training through the winter.(keep +
I have been keeping up a daily workout. 口语里别把它说成 keep to do(错),keep 后面永远跟 -ing。
The more I move, the easier it gets.(★09-13 the more…the more…)
I very like running."
I'm really into running."
very like 是典型中式,用 be into / really enjoy
I do sports every day."
I work out every day."
中文"做运动"直译 do sports 不地道;work out / exercise 更自然;play a sport 才指具体某项球类
My body is very strong."
I'm in good shape."
说人身体好、结实用 in shape / fit,不说 body is strong
I want to reduce fat."
I want to lose body fat / get lean."
reduce fat 是中式,lose body fat 或 get lean 才顺
My stamina is not enough."
I don't have much stamina."
stamina 不可说 is not enough,用 have much stamina
• 锻炼 do exercise → work out / train / get active
• 耐力 stamina → endurance / staying power
• 身体健康 body is good → in good shape / physically fit
• 累 very tired → worn out / drained / fatigued
• 增肌 make muscle → build muscle / put on strength
• 与身体相关 related to → linked to / associated with

Burning calories is the least interesting thing exercise does. At the cellular level, regular training rebuilds the body in ways that matter for the brain as much as for the muscles. The best-studied change is mitochondrial biogenesis: muscle cells respond to repeated contraction by making more mitochondria, the tiny organelles that turn fuel and oxygen into usable energy. More mitochondria means more aerobic capacity, which is why a trained person sustains effort that would leave a beginner breathless.
The cardiovascular side changes too. Endurance training enlarges the heart's stroke volume and grows the capillary network that feeds muscle and, more to the point, brain tissue, which is the biological basis of the clearer head people report after a workout. Then there is neurogenesis. Aerobic activity raises a protein called BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), which supports new neurons and new synapses. A body in motion keeps the brain plastic. As far as I can tell, that is why my morning session loosens my tongue.
None of this needs a gym. Bodyweight work, a brisk walk, copying an animal's gait, that is enough to start the cascade. Same lesson as vocabulary, when I think about it. Consistency beats intensity, and the mitochondria, the capillaries and the synapses quietly handle the rest.
• aerobic = Greek aer(空气)+ bios(生命),意为需氧的;反义 anaerobic = an-(无)+ aer。
• kinetic = Greek kinein(运动),与 cinema(运动影像)、kinesiology(运动机能学)同根;将来攻拉丁/希腊词根时,这是"动"的希腊线,与拉丁 movere(mob/mot 族)互补。
• mitochondria = Greek mitos(线/丝)+ chondrion(小颗粒),显微镜下丝线般的颗粒;同源 mitosis(有丝分裂,染色体像线被分开)。
This morning, resting between sets, one passage from the Book of Jin kept coming back to me. It is about Zhang Gui, the man who started the Liangzhou line. In the first year of Yongning, 301, he was sent west as Protector of the Qiang and Governor of Liangzhou. Raiders and Xianbei rebels were running loose across the region, and the record says he broke them, so that his authority reached the whole of Hexi.
But the line I underlined twice is not a battle report. He pulled five hundred sons of the nine commanderies into a school, set up a post for the promotion of letters, and had them practise the archery rite every spring and autumn.
I live under 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山), and people here still build on the same slope where Li Zibiao once lived. In the same basin lies the old city of Guzang, 姑臧卧龙城, described in the Book of Jin as three li east to west and seven li north to south, its ground shaped like a dragon, hence the sleeping dragon. And when a jade ram came out of the Lingjun Tai site, a small green-white animal lying down with its legs tucked under it, the old saying made sense at a glance: 凉州畜牧天下饶. (玉卧羊是前凉的东西,武威灵钧台遗址出的,躺姿特别安稳)
So this is where my twenty minutes of push-ups land. A body that can take a beating is the first thing any place needs, and that is the pastoral half of Liangzhou. But Zhang Gui did not stop there. He put five hundred boys into a school in the same breath. Surviving was half the job; staying literate was the other half.
Train the body, keep the books open.
I started those twenty minutes for my legs and my lungs. Turns out I was training my brain the whole time.
BDNF I mentioned once in the physiology piece above. Let me finish that thought. Training pushes BDNF up, so neurons branch harder and the connections between them thicken, and it is one of the few things known to keep new neurons appearing in the adult hippocampus at all. Which is why the hour after training feels clearer. That part is not imagination.
Then the hardware. I keep coming back to Erickson's walking trial. A year of walking, and the front of the hippocampus grew by roughly two percent, cancelling out one to two years of the shrinkage that normally comes with age. No drugs, no lab, no intervention harder than putting one foot in front of the other.
What I did not expect was that muscle talks back. Contraction puts proteins into the blood, and one of them, SERPINA1E, crosses the blood-brain barrier into the hippocampus, where it drives neurogenesis and BDNF. The 2026 Nature Communications paper, from the Korea Brain Research Institute and Seoul National University, is blunt about it: switch that muscle protein off in mice and exercise stops helping memory at all. Bone joins in too, through osteocalcin.
Supply lines next. Movement sends more oxygen and fuel to the prefrontal cortex, the part that holds attention and planning. So what improves is not only mood. It is the ability to sit down and think.
The mood part everyone already knows. Endorphins, dopamine and serotonin up, cortisol down. A prescription-free antidepressant, roughly speaking.
Housekeeping is the last one, and it happens while you sleep. The glymphatic system flushes metabolic waste out of brain tissue, including the beta-amyloid fragments tied to Alzheimer's disease. A 2025 Nature Communications study split people into one single session versus three sessions a week of thirty minutes on a bike, for three months. Only the three-month group showed faster glymphatic flow and thicker meningeal lymphatics, the drainage pipes. One workout did close to nothing.
Different movement reaches different parts of the brain, which is as good a reason as any not to do only one thing. Walking, running, swimming and cycling build the base and lift the growth factors. Dumbbells, bands, a wall push-up session lean on the prefrontal cortex and the basal ganglia, so decisions and habits get the work, and strength work also raises IGF-1, which reaches the brain. HIIT is the shortcut, all noradrenaline and dopamine, good for alertness and for holding back impulses, though you want some fitness before you try it. Anything with hand-eye timing or memorised sequences, table tennis, badminton, dance, forces the brain to build messier and more useful wiring. Yoga, tai chi, mindfulness sit on the parasympathetic side and pull stress hormones down.
Dose matters, and past a point it turns against you. The WHO baseline is 150 minutes of moderate aerobic work a week plus strength training. Chekroud's 2018 analysis in Lancet Psychiatry, more than 1.2 million people, put the sweet spot at thirty to sixty minutes per session, peaking near forty-five. Beyond ninety it flipped. Three to five moderate sessions a week does the job. Longer is not smarter.
Then there is the window. Twenty to thirty minutes of moderate work buys roughly one to two hours of sharper thinking, which is when I should be reading or speaking English rather than scrolling. And a 2025 study in Alzheimer's & Dementia found that moderate-to-vigorous activity between six in the morning and noon came with forty percent lower risk of all-cause dementia and fifty-six percent lower for Alzheimer's. The afternoon and evening groups showed no significant difference.
The part nobody wants to hear. It has to keep going. Structural change takes about twelve weeks, and it slides back when you stop. Sleep is the multiplier, since most of the clearing and consolidating happens at night, so trading sleep for an extra workout is a bad deal. One more thing from the reviews, which I like because it is slightly perverse. Put one session into your week that you genuinely dislike. Picking the unpleasant option on purpose is practice, and that kind of practice is worth more than the extra reps.
None of it is dramatic. Moderate effect sizes, a boring dose, and a payoff measured in decades rather than weeks. I suspect that is exactly why so few people collect.

A piece of health news I keep coming back to. The World Health Organization's 2020 guidelines on physical activity and sedentary behaviour set the adult target at 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic work a week, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous work, plus muscle-strengthening activity on two or more days. (这条信息值得反复说) The reason is spelled out in the same document: people who sit less and move more tend to have lower rates of all-cause mortality, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, type 2 diabetes and some cancers, and they report better sleep and less anxiety and depression, independent of whether they ever set foot in a gym. What I find useful is the framing. Movement is not a punishment for eating, it is maintenance for the body, like charging a battery you intend to keep using. So I retell this not as a lecture but as a reminder to my future self.
