Okay, it is a Monday morning and I opened my phone before the porridge even boiled, which is a habit I should probably hand back to 2024. Anyway. UNESCO just dropped its Global Education Monitoring Report 2026, and one number sat up and slapped me: 273 million. That is how many children, teenagers and young adults were out of school in 2024. 我盯着这个数字，脑子先翻译成「两亿七千万」，然后才意识到这不是一个小国的人口，是全球坐在教室外的名字的总数。

I tried to say the whole thing out loud in English, like a news reader who actually practised. "Two hundred and seventy-three million children and youth were out of school in 2024." 念到 million 那个音节，舌头打了个弯，粥的汽笛响了，我笑了。The funniest part: after nearly a decade of promises, that number has only fallen by one per cent. One per cent. 十年，百分之一，这效率连我家楼下那只慢吞吞的乌龟都要摇头。

The detail that really got under my skin was the shape of the gap. The further up the ladder you climb, the more people fall off it. At primary age about one in nine is out; by upper secondary nearly one in three. 我前阵子学过 rate of change，画过那种越来越高、越来越陡的线，今天它倒过来变成「越往上越漏」，原来一条线的斜率也能讲教育的不公。

Reading it, two old lines floated back. One from John Dewey, the American educator, who said a hundred years ago that education is a process of living, not a preparation for future living. 教育不是为以后存钱，教育就是当下的生活本身。The other from Ji Xianlin, the Chinese scholar, who called education the foundation of the nation and said we should teach love of country by first teaching love of one's hometown. 一个美国人，一个中国人，隔着一个世纪和一片海，说的却是同一件事：学校不该是等候室。

There is one more thing this report shook loose, and I want to say it to myself plainly. I teach myself, no institution, no supervisor, nobody to mark my essays, and the rival I can see most clearly is someone writing about the very same ground, my hometown. A pinch of envy visited me this week over a published book on the history of Liangzhou, and my first move was to reach for its flaws, to call it weak before I even knew why. Aristotle noticed the pattern long before psychology did: we envy the near, never the far. 我不会去酸写罗马帝国的人，可写我脚下这块土的人，我酸。Naval Ravikant's test is even harder: unless you would trade your whole life for his, one hundred per cent, his deadlines and his bad years included, the envy means nothing. I would not trade, so I wrote the feeling down, named it, and asked the only useful question: what exactly does that book have that I can still earn? 嫉妒不是罪行，是一盏亮给我看的灯，照的是我自己还没走完的那段路。

One more detail from the report refused to leave me. About three quarters of the 273 million live in just two broad regions, sub-Saharan Africa and Central and Southern Asia. The map of who misses school is also a map of who was born where, and no one chooses the ticket of a birthplace. Mine landed me at the east end of the Hexi Corridor, in an old city that opened its first school back in the year 301. 我没抽过出生地的签，但落点不差。So when I complain about having no institution behind me, the report quietly corrects me: a quiet morning, a boiling pot of porridge and a bookshelf are already the front row. The gap outside is real, and my job inside it is simple, use what the front row gives me, and keep writing honest pages about the ground I stand on.

My grandfather never talked about education the way reports do. As a young man he used to carry his written questions across town, to an old scholar who knew the classics, and carry the answers back the same way. No institution behind him, no certificate in front of him, just a boy with a notebook and a long walk. 听我爸说，那几页问题，他后来当宝贝一样收着。For years I took that story as a scene from poor times, something that has nothing to do with me. Lately I read it another way. The walk itself was the tuition, and the notebook was the school. When I skip a morning page now, I am not failing some report card. I am letting a long walk go to waste, and that stings in a different place.

One honest confession before the plan. This morning, before the porridge, I scrolled my phone for a while. I could claim ten minutes, but honestly I stopped counting. Nothing in it was worth the time, and that is exactly how it works, nothing in it is ever worth the time, and it takes the time anyway. So this month I started sorting my day into four plain labels. The compound things, like reading and writing, get my best hour. The urgent small things get one batch, all at once, not the whole day in crumbs. The draining things get cut at the door. The restful things come last, as a reward, never as an opener. 今天那张读书笔记是复利的事，早上输给了消耗的事，账目清楚，怨不得谁。The labels do not make me a better person. They just make the morning honest enough to see who stole what.

Here is the plan for tonight, and it is embarrassingly small. One card. A single index card for the reading note I skipped this morning, three lines, maybe four. I know myself well enough to predict the failure mode: I will open the book at eight, decide to read forty pages first, get sleepy by nine, and close everything by half past nine with zero cards written. So tonight the rule runs backwards. Card first, pages after. Card done, whatever reading happens next is a bonus. Card not done, then I did not study today, no matter how many pages I flipped. 小目标定得越具体，失败越没地方藏。Three lines about one idea, that is the whole exam tonight.

Porridge is ready. 今天先把 out of school 这个词组塞进口袋，走路的时候在嘴里滚两遍，别等考试那天才第一次见它。

语法笔记

• the + 比较级 , the + 比较级 表示「越……越……」：The higher the level, the wider the gap. 两个比较级都要带 the，缺一不可，这是今天的主句型。

• by + 过去时间点，主句用过去完成时：By 2024, the number had reached 273 million. by 是截止线，had reached 强调「到那个点为止已经到了」。回扣 10-29 教育线图的 the figure had climbed to。

• over / in the last decade：over 接一段时间讲跨度，in 接具体时段讲内部，别混；one per cent 作主语谓语用单数 has fallen。

• rate 永远是率，total 是量：31 per cent 是率，130 million 是量，读图必须两数并看，只念一个会骗人。

• unless 引导的条件句：Unless you would trade your whole life for his, the envy means nothing. unless ＝「若不、除非」，语气比 if not 硬，主句常配否定或消极词呼应。

• 现在分词作后置定语：Jealousy and admiration are the same heartbeat taking two different turns. taking 直接跟在 heartbeat 后面，等于 which takes，比定语从句轻快。

• one in nine / one in three：分数的口语表达，About one in nine children of primary age is out of school. one in + 数字作主语时，谓语习惯用单数。

• not A but B 的否定转移：The old list is not a court sentence but a dashboard. 否定落在第一个名词上，but 后引出真正的判断，比 not only...but also 更干脆。

• used to 与 be used to：I used to take that story as a scene from poor times（过去常那样看，现在不了）；be used to + 名词/doing（习惯于），I am used to writing cards now。别混。

• no matter + 疑问词引导让步：No matter how many pages I flip, an unwritten card means an unstudied day. how many/what/where 都能接，主句给真正的判断。

The story I picked for this Monday comes from UNESCO, the UN agency for education. Its Global Education Monitoring Report 2026 says that 273 million children, adolescents and youth were out of school in 2024, and that this number has fallen by only one per cent in nearly a decade. The report adds that the dropouts are not spread evenly: about three quarters of them live in sub-Saharan Africa and Central and Southern Asia, and the gap widens with every step up the ladder, from roughly 11 per cent out at primary age to about 31 per cent at upper secondary age. Completion rates, meanwhile, keep climbing: 88 per cent finish primary, 78 per cent lower secondary, 61 per cent upper secondary.

学科短文

The more I read about education, the more two lines keep ringing in my ear. One comes from John Dewey, the American pragmatist who wrote My Pedagogic Creed at the turn of the last century: education is a process of living, not a preparation for future living. 翻成中文就是「教育是生活的过程，而不是将来生活的预备」。The other comes from Ji Xianlin, the Chinese linguist and scholar who, in 1999, called education the very foundation of the nation, 教育为立国之本. Both men, a century apart and an ocean away, were saying something close: schooling is not a waiting room, and a country that neglects it neglects its own ground.

Dewey's point bites hardest when I look at the UNESCO numbers from this morning. If school is life itself, then being out of school is being locked out of a real slice of living. And the gap is not flat along the path: the higher the level, the more doors close, with upper secondary shedding nearly a third of its age group. That is the last mile of education, the same last mile I once noticed in internet coverage, the hardest people to reach are always the last to be served, whether the line is fibre or a school desk.

Self-teaching, the road I have chosen, sits in a strange spot in this picture. It is the most Deweyan form of education there is, learning as living itself, and yet it carries a shadow nobody prints on the poster. When there is no institution to grade you, you become your own only audience, and the rival you see most clearly is the person working the same patch of ground. That is where envy comes from, and Aristotle noticed it long before psychology had a term for it: people envy those near them, never the distant great. 离得近的才酸得起来，够不着的，人只会仰望。The remedy is not to pretend the light is off but to read it. Decode the envy: turn his book is weak into what exactly does he have that I can still earn. Then climb the pole: quote the person, learn from them, make them someone you thank rather than someone you resent. 嫉妒最好的去处，是把对手变成文章里感谢的人。

Long before psychology drew up its inventories, people kept a humbler list, the seven deadly sins, 中文世界的「七宗罪」: pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony and sloth. The list has long since walked out of its old setting and into films, novels and management books, where it works as a plain inventory of human weakness, no ceremony required. 我今天只用得上其中三项。Envy is the pinch I have just described. Pride is the quieter one, the way a cup fills up article by article, and the fix I keep on my desk is a narrow rail: all my confidence belongs to the cause, my hometown's history is worth a decade of work, while all my caution belongs to every single claim I print, 每一条论断都可能错。Sloth is the gentlest name for the reading note I did not write this morning. Read this way, the old list is not a court sentence but a dashboard, and everyone's dashboard keeps at least one light on.

And the list never travelled alone. It came with its counterpart, the seven virtues, 中文叫「七美德」. Four of them are the classic engine of character: prudence, to see what is truly in front of you; justice, to give each thing its due; temperance, to hold the reins; fortitude, to keep walking when the road turns bad. The other three are of the heart, and Chinese renders them simply as 信、望、爱. The two lists are one machine: every vice names a drag, and the matching virtue names the engine that replaces it. Envy answers to the oldest training I know, when you see someone worthy, think how to equal him, 把那股酸翻译成一份学习计划。Pride answers to humility, sloth answers to diligence, and diligence's smallest honest unit is one card of a reading note, written tonight, not someday. 美德这张清单读下来，不是让你对着镜子当完人，是给每一盏亮着的灯配一个开关。

A money word fits here, and it sharpens the whole page: 割韭菜, being harvested. My definition of it has changed. The cheap version is paying five thousand for something worth five hundred, an overpriced label you can walk away from, painful but finished. The real harvest is quieter and crueler: it binds half of your life, deeply and repeatedly, to a single asset, to a person who turns out wrong, to a flat bought at the very top of the leverage ladder, or even to a schooling track you were never suited for, pushed through by pure stubbornness. 一次性、明码标价的交易，几乎都构不成割韭菜；真正的镰刀在你看不见的地方，它收的不是你口袋里的钱，是你往后半辈子的时间。Seen from that angle, self-education is the anti-harvest: it is the one asset that keeps compounding back into your own hands, because nobody can mark it up, nobody can hold it for you, and nobody can sell it to you twice. Life has its own candlestick chart. 你不自己教育自己，你那张K线上的每一根阳线阴线，就是别人替你画的。

The practical turn comes last. Reading Dewey this way, education as the process of living itself, the question stops being which school you attended and becomes what today's page contains. My own smallest unit is one card of a reading note: one idea, three lines, written tonight, in English if I can manage it. The card is tiny, but it is the anti-harvest in action, a stake in the one asset nobody can inflate, hold for me, or sell to me twice. And if the old vices tap me on the shoulder tomorrow morning, pride whispering that one card is too small, envy pointing at somebody else's shelf of finished books, sloth offering a warmer blanket, the dashboard is right there on the desk. Read the light, thank what it shows, and write the card anyway. 灯亮着不可怕，可怕的是把仪表盘拆了，装作没这回事。

Dewey had a word for this side of learning, occupation. He did not mean job training. He meant that a child learns carpentry by making a box, and the knowledge arrives as a passenger on the activity. My adult version of the box is the card. I sit down to write three lines, and while writing them the card examines me back. Which word can I not yet say in English. Which year do I have to stop and check. Which connection I believed in falls apart the moment I try to type it. The card finds all three, quietly, in four minutes. 卡不用等开花结果才叫学习，写的时候学习已经发生完了。Tonight's box is small, but I am making it with my own hands.

There is an older tool for this, and it costs even less. Zeng Guofan, a Qing statesman whose talent was famously unremarkable in youth, kept a diary with one working rule, record the day's failure in one plain line, no decoration, then close the book and go to work. He wrote like a man keeping accounts, and the accounts added up over the decades into a reputation for steadiness. My card borrows his rule. Three lines, plain words, no performance. The romantic version of self-education buys courses and waits for inspiration to arrive. The boring version writes one card, then another, and lets the years do the compounding. 曾国藩的账本不好看，可它几十年没断，好看是后来才有的事。

Ji Xianlin's own road is proof of the boring version. He spent his young German years on languages that almost nobody around him could check, working through grammar and texts one page at a time, with no audience and no applause. Decades later, those unread pages turned into work that scholars still reach for. The pattern repeats in every serious life I can name, from my grandfather's long walks with a notebook to a statesman's plain account lines. Nothing dramatic happened on any single day. The drama was cumulative. 单看哪一天都不起眼，攒上几十年，就成了别人嘴里的天分。Self-education stays invisible while it happens, and that invisibility is the price and the protection at once.

Ji Xianlin had a quieter, more local remedy. He said we should teach love of country by first teaching love of one's own hometown, starting in primary school with a subject he called native soil, the hills, the people and the customs right outside the window. 这话从一个走遍世界的大学者嘴里说出来，反倒最朴素：你连脚下这块土都不熟，谈什么远方。For Dewey the school was a miniature of society; for Ji Xianlin the first society a child meets is the one at home. 两条路，一头是生活本身，一头是脚下那方土。

Standing under 凉州莲花山（姑臧紫山）, I think of Ji Xianlin's native-soil lesson. The city this mountain guards, 武威就是古凉州, built its Confucian temple early, in 301 under the former Liang ruler Zhang Gui, and the plaque there still reads 天下文眀. For seventeen hundred years this place treated schooling as the ground you stand on, not a ladder to somewhere else, which is exactly the kind of local-rooted learning Ji Xianlin said should come first. And a boy raised at the foot of this mountain, Li Zibiao, walked out in the 1770s, learned languages in Naples, and by 1793 stood as interpreter for a British embassy. His road began with one square of native soil under this purple mountain; education, for him, was Dewey's living, a door opened by the place he came from, not a deferral of life. 凉州学于我，说到底就是这样一种习惯：先用这座山、这座城把根扎住，再借教育这根绳子去够整个世界。

And the same mountain settles the uglier feeling I confessed this week. My study of Liangzhou is pure self-education, an autodidact's road with no school and no supervisor, and the envy light on the dashboard points at the one book I have not finished yet, my own. Standing here, I know the better move: climb the pole, thank the rivals in writing, and let the smallest unit of diligence be one card of a reading note tonight. 这山看着我把两件事并成一件：把根扎住，把灯读懂。

The mountain also hands me a mirror from closer to home. Zhang Shu, a Qing dynasty scholar from this same city of ancient Liangzhou, carried a temper famous enough to cost him friends and a career. Yet that same full-blooded stubbornness made him pry open a brick-sealed stone pavilion in town, against the local warning that opening it would bring wind and hail, and the stele inside, the one that later helped scholars work through an entire lost script, repaid his impatience with patience, stroke by stroke. His temperament was full, and his scholarship stayed empty enough to keep digging. 我做凉州学，要的正是这个配比：气性满，给的是敢拆砖的胆；学问空，给的是一字一字考下去的耐心。Pride fills the man, humility fills the page, and a self-taught student needs both at once.

One more quiet detail from the same ground. The temple compound standing today took its present shape in a Ming rebuilding, in the 1430s, more than a thousand years after the school first opened. The city re-founding its own school whenever the roof leaked matters more than any single founder. 自我教育也一样，修屋顶这件事，一辈子要干很多回。A school that never needed repair was never really used, and I suspect the same is true of a learner.
