Artist Statement
真实面对自己当下的生存体验和感觉，以及自己的生存环境，是当代艺术首要的态度。但生活在每一个当代的人，被各种文化观念和意识形态，乃至画种的“行业标准”所包裹，所以，个人所体验到的生存感觉的真实性，须有心灵的自由和独立，才能超越各种外在的文化观念和意识形态的束缚，还给个人感觉一个鲜活的状态。记忆和艺术具有内在一致性，它们都是心灵与材料的结合，自我与世界的关联与重构。

Truly facing one's current living experience and feeling, as well as one's living environment, is the primary attitude of contemporary art. People must have the freedom and independence of mind to think beyond the various external constraints and cultural concepts that we in every society may feel comfortable with. Memory and art have internal consistency - both are the combination of mind and material, the association and reconstruction.

我是一名艺术家和艺术教育家，目前在杭州生活和教学。我的艺术实践与教学紧密相连。艺术的创作的过程指导着我的教学，教学艺术也丰富了我的个人艺术作品。
多年来，我的作品的发展一直是一种用粘土和油漆材料结合。我花了很多年的时间探索陶瓷和绘画，以及两者之间的关系。
我最近的作品是沉思与回归，包括小幅水墨和水彩风景的研究，以及丙烯绘画在画布上的表现。小景观研究是对地方的冥想，它们反映了我在户外写生的实践，用简单的材料直接观察自然。
大幅绘画作品是本着发现的精神完成的。这些绘画并不是以外部世界作为作品的出发点，而是更多的是关于绘画本身的行为。我的兴趣是探索浇筑薄漆的过程，并在分层中工作，以获得特定的美学结果。
小画是生活在两个深刻鼓舞人心的环境中完成的：杭州西湖的文化景观和日本京都以西农村的水稻种植村。这两个地方优美的环境，到现在我仍思考其中的意义。
西湖的研究是从2019年开始的，而来自日本的绘画是在去年完成的，因为新冠疫情，我在那里度过了一个意想不到的四季。丙烯画是最近回到杭州后，在家庭工作室里完成。
我也相信观众会把自己的天性和经验带到一件艺术作品中。艺术作品的意义并不局限于艺术家的意图，而是每个观众的个人反应的产物。
I am an artist and art educator currently living and teaching in Hangzhou. My art practice is closely connected with teaching. The process of making art informs my teaching, and teaching art enriches my personal artwork.
The development of my work through the years has been a kind of dance with the materials of clay and paint. I have spent many years exploring ceramics and painting, as well as the intersection between the two.
My recent work for this show, Contemplation and Return, includes small ink andwatercolor landscape studies and acrylic on canvas paintings. The small landscape studies are a meditation on place, and they are a reflection of my practice of working outdoors with simple materials in direct observation of nature.
The large paintings on canvas are done in the spirit of discovery. Rather than using the outer world as a point of departure for the work, these paintings are more about the act of painting itself. My interest is in exploring the processes of pouring thin paint and working in layers to achieve a particular aesthetic result.
The small paintings were done in the two profoundly inspiring environments that I have recently found myself living in: the cultural landscape of West Lake in Hangzhou and the rural rice farming village in the countryside west of Kyoto, Japan. Both places are environments of profound beauty that I am still contemplating the significance of.
The small West Lake paintings are from 2019, and the paintings from Japan were done last year when I spent an unexpected four seasons there due to the pandemic. The acrylic on canvas paintings were done in my home studio after my recent return to Hangzhou.
I also believe the viewer brings his or her own nature and experience to a work of art. The meaning of a work of art is not limited to the artist's stated intention, but is as much a product of the personal response of every individual viewer.
