We usually treat "speed" as the number on the dashboard, sixty kilometres per hour and that is that. But in calculus that number is really a rate of change, how fast your position moves with time. The moment you brake, the rate of change drops, and that drop itself has a rate. So the speedometer reads something instantaneous, a snapshot, not the whole story.
Then the news landed. Anne Carson(安妮·卡森),a Canadian poet, classicist, and translator, won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. Here the same word kept whispering: transfer. Both are ferre, carrying something across a river of time.

the + 比较级 …, the + 比较级 …:the steeper the gradient, the faster the rate of change. 两个 the 后都跟比较级,不能写 the more steeper。
时态地图:settled facts 用 past simple(She was born in 1950),先后事件用 past perfect(By 1981 she had completed her PhD),still-true 成就用 present perfect(She has taught at several universities)。常错是把出生写成 She has been born,出生是单点过去,必须用 was born。
I very like driving
I'm really into driving
My speed is very fast
✅ 地道表达 the rate of change is high
I by bus go to work
I commute by bus
The traffic is very big
✅ 地道表达 we were bumper to bumper
She is an influential writer 就完了,口语加 widely:a widely influential poet。
• 「古典文学」是 classical literature,不是 classic literature(classic 多指「经典杰作」,classical 指「古典时期的」)。卡森是 classicist(古典学者),研究 classical texts。
• 「把古希腊诗变成现代容器」用 turn...into 或 reframe...as,别说 become...to 这种中式结构。
• 加速:speed up → accelerate / pick up speed / build up speed
• 拥堵:traffic jam → congestion / gridlock / bottleneck
• 换乘 / 迁移:change to → transfer to(transfer is today's connecting thread, also the root of Carson's poetic practice)
• influential ≈ seminal, consequential, formative
• translate ≈ render, transpose, carry across(词根本义)
• fragment ≈ remnant, scrap, broken piece
• to doubt ≈ to question, to suspect, to wonder(轻重不同,见一词多义)
• instantaneous ˌɪnstənˈteɪniəs adj.
• gradient ˈɡreɪdiənt n.
• velocity vəˈlɒsəti n. 速度(带方向)|词根 velox(拉丁,快)
• congestion kənˈdʒestʃən n. 拥堵|词根 gerere(拉丁,搬运 / 承载)
• classicist ˈklæsɪsɪst n. 古典学者|classicus(拉丁,最高等级的);卡森是 trained classicist
• fragment ˈfræɡmənt n. 残篇、碎片|frangere(拉丁,破);Sappho survives only in fragments
• translation trænzˈleɪʃn n. 翻译、转渡|trans-(横越)+ latus(ferre 的过去分词,被搬运);字面即「搬运到对岸」
• oeuvre ˈɜːvrə n.
• The steeper the gradient, the faster the rate of change.(the + 比较级 …, the + 比较级 …,描述变化率)
• What makes a red light dangerous is not the stop itself but the rate at which you drop to zero.(not … but …
• What strikes me most is that she treats the ancient not as museum glass but as a living voice.(描述卡森的诗学姿态)
• Her signature move is to take a broken fragment and turn it into a container for modern feeling.(卡森「残篇即容器」的方法)
When a fast car meets a slow one, it must give way to avoid a crash.
• build up speed(逐渐提速,比 speed up 更画面)
• a playful dialogue with the classical tradition(授奖词原句,描写「与古典传统嬉戏对话」极准)
• absence as a form, not a loss(把「缺失」当作形式而非丧失,卡森诗学核心)
In a 2024 Louisiana Channel interview, Life is Not Fair, Anne Carson(安妮·卡森)rewrote Descartes' cogito, ergo sum (I think, therefore I am) as dubito, ergo cogito, ergo sum (I doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am). Her point: the world remembers only the T-shirt slogan "I think, therefore I am," but forgets that the real starting point was dubito, doubt, the very part people dropped because doubt got a bad name.
We should keep two layers straight. In Descartes himself, "universal doubt" was a method, a way to strip away everything questionable until he reached the one thing that could not be doubted, and only then did cogito become the first principle he distilled. Carson simply puts that dropped starting point back at the front of the sentence. It is a literary extension, not a revision of the history of philosophy, and certainly not Descartes' own words. Always cite it as Carson's rephrasing.
Etymologically, dubito comes from Latin dubitare, literally "to be of two minds, to waver." Cogito comes from cogitare (cog- to drive + agitare to set moving), literally "to drive thoughts together in the mind." Doubt is the wobble before thoughts cohere; thinking is the act of gathering them into shape. This lands squarely on today's focus dimension, transfer. The essence of doubt is to loosen a settled conclusion in one field, then carry the concept across to try it somewhere else. Calculus speaks of "rate of change" and I carry it over to explain a traffic light; Carson carries Sappho into a modern bedroom. Both run on this restless doubt and this carrying. Imagination is the engine of transfer.
The interest rate stayed low.
This medicine is a derivative of penicillin.
I transferred to the metro at the interchange.
His sentence was commuted to life imprisonment.
The mode is the most frequent value.
注意:本篇最易踩的是 rate(变化率 ≠ 利率)、derivative(数学导数 vs 金融衍生品别串台)、doubt 与 suspect 混用,以及把卡森的 dubito 误当成笛卡尔原话。
Calculus begins with a slightly mischievous question: what happens to speed when the time slice shrinks to nothing? A car on a morning commute has an everyday "speed" of distance over time. But the derivative asks something sharper, the instantaneous rate of change, how fast position moves at one exact moment. You reach it by letting the time interval approach zero without ever touching it, a limit. The steeper the gradient of the distance curve, the higher the rate of change. A red light is only a place where that rate is forced to zero, then forced back up. English note: instantaneous is not the same word as instant; instant is the noun "a moment", instantaneous the adjective "lasting a moment".

Carson's method is the same shape in another key. Anne Carson(安妮·卡森)was born on 21 June 1950 in Toronto, Canada. Because her father was a bank clerk whose workplace kept moving, her childhood shifted among several small towns in Ontario. During a high-school lunch break, a Latin teacher tutored her in Greek, and that encounter with Sappho never left her. She took her BA, MA, and PhD in classics at the University of Toronto (PhD 1981), then studied Greek metrics and textual criticism at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Over the next four decades she taught at Princeton, McGill, Michigan, and NYU. Her first book, Eros the Bittersweet (1986), grew out of doctoral work on Sappho. What she does with the ancients is not quotation but transformation: she treats a fragment, a broken verse, as an open container, and into that classical shell pours modern life, modern grief, modern desire. The ancient and the contemporaneous are set in contrast, not merged into costume drama. Both the green wave and the classical container are acts of transfer, moving a form across a boundary without breaking what it carries.
Carson was raised in a Catholic family. Her mother, Margaret, was a devout Catholic, and Carson attended Mass with her for many years during childhood and youth. That early immersion in ritual and scripture shaped her ear for the cadence of ancient texts, even though her own writing stays resolutely secular.
Liangzhou Lotus Mountain (Guzang Purple Mountain) has stood for a thousand years, with people coming and going at its foot, the mountain and its people keeping each other company for over a millennium.
Today's traffic thread falls right onto the city's form axis. The old Guzang Sleeping-Dragon City ran seven li north to south and three li east to west, shaped like a dragon; the city itself was a carefully planned road network and scale, the same craft as computing a green wave today, both letting movement flow smoothly through the city.
For ancient Liangzhou, today's Wuwei, to grow into a world-known tourist city, it must first become a transport hub of the northwest, because tourist transport is the lifeline of any scenic area. The bronze running horse from the Leitai Tomb, cast under Zhang Ji of Former Liang, has galloped for nearly eighteen hundred years and still speaks for Liangzhou, a classical object that shines straight into the present.
Carson's lifelong dialogue with the classical past finds a personal echo here. Where Carson rebuilds Sappho's fragments into modern containers, 小优 presses contemporary Liangzhou identity back into classical form, a mirror-image of the same instinct. Both insist the past is not dead; it is a voice waiting to be carried across. Carson, on the other side of the earth, refuses to let ancient Greece lie in a museum; I, too, refuse to let ancient Liangzhou live only in local gazetteers. Learning a foreign language and reading the Nobel list, in the end, is so that the land beneath our own feet can also be understood by the world.
![]()
ferre(拉丁语,搬运、承载),过去分词 latus。
• transfer = trans- + ferre:搬运转移 → 迁移
• transport = trans- + portare(亦「搬运」):横越搬运 → 交通、运输
• confer = con- (together) + ferre:共同搬运 → 授予(confer an award,诺奖即 conferred)
• refer = re- (back) + ferre:搬回 → 指涉、参照
• ferry = ferre 直接派生:摆渡,把人货搬过河
• 10-13 科技期提醒 data 正式文体可作复数;今天表格报数字,the data are 接着用,别又滑回 the data is。

• Q1:How do you usually get around your city?(关键词:walk, pedal, well-connected but ageing, beat the morning rush)
• Q2:Describe a writer you admire.(关键词:a widely influential poet, classical fragments, a playful dialogue with the tradition)
• Q3:What annoys you most about commuting?(关键词:bumper to bumper, run late, wind down the window)
• instantaneous:/ˌɪnstənˈteɪniəs/(重音在 -tay,别落第一音节)
• congestion:/kənˈdʒestʃən/(重音在 -jest,g 发 dʒ 不是 g)
• contemporaneous /kənˌtempəˈreɪniəs/:重音在 ra
Spanish keeps the last word, because it fits the theme: El mundo se entiende caminando. English: Doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am. Spanish: Dudo, luego pienso, luego soy.

The table below ranks the world's eight slowest cities for traffic in 2024, based on the TomTom Traffic Index.
![]()
The table below shows information about average travel time per 10 kilometres and annual time lost in rush-hour traffic per commuter in eight selected world cities in 2024. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes.
• Overall, Barranquilla recorded the longest average travel time per 10 km, at 36 minutes and 6 seconds.
• Despite ranking only sixth for travel time, Lima and Dublin tied for the highest annual time loss, at 155 hours each.
• Kyoto, with a travel time of 33 minutes and 16 seconds, lost the fewest hours annually, at just 95.
• The figures suggest that a slower journey does not necessarily mean a greater annual loss, since congestion frequency also plays a part.
Key points for your essay:
① Overview: all eight cities cluster between 32 min 45 sec and 36 min 06 sec per 10 km, a spread of under four minutes; yet the annual time loss ranges widely, from 95 to 155 hours. ② Two extremes: Barranquilla tops travel time (36:06) but only ranks mid-table for annual loss (130 h); Lima and Dublin sit sixth and eighth on travel time but share the highest annual loss (155 h each). ③ The standout exception: Kyoto is a mere 31 seconds slower than Dublin per 10 km, yet loses 60 fewer hours per year (95 vs 155), which shows that congestion frequency and road-network structure are doing the heavy lifting, not raw speed alone. ④ Closing: travel time and annual time loss are not simply linear; peak-hour congestion frequency, city scale, and average trip distance all bend that line.
Statistical note:
The key skill in a Task 1 table is not reading every cell but spotting the critical rows and the outlier. Lima and Dublin are the critical rows for annual loss (tied at 155 h); Kyoto is the outlier that breaks the intuitive "slower = more loss" pattern. More importantly, stay clear-eyed about the metric types: travel time per 10 km is an intensity measure (a rate, like prevalence on 10-14), while annual time loss is a cumulative total. Do not convert 155 hours into "25 minutes per day" and then compare it directly with the per-10-km figure, because the denominators differ. The data come from the TomTom Traffic Index 2024 (500 cities, 62 countries, 737 billion km of Floating Car Data); the annual loss is an estimate aggregated from rush-hour weekdays, not a direct measurement, so mind the methodology when you cite it.
