本系列为「契苾小优」雅思备考专用输出,转载请注明出处。

陪练对象:小优(契苾小优,古凉州今武威)

外语自言自语|场景:清晨盘算今天的锻炼与睡眠,顺手把学英语的劲头挪到身体上|语言:英语为主,中文救场

️ 外语独白

this morning i laced up before the sun was properly up. nothing heroic, just a slow loop around the block, the kind of walk you do half asleep. but it counts, and that is the whole point of a habit: the small thing you do on the dull days is what carries you, not the big thing you do once.

嗯,说真的,今天轮到健康日,我本来想偷懒说「改天再动」。但改天这两个字,我太熟了,它从来不等于某一天,它等于永远不。所以我就去了。

i was thinking about why exercise is so hard to keep but so easy to talk about. we all know movement is good for us. the knowledge is free, the doing is the expensive part. and then it hit me, this is exactly the transfer problem we keep circling in these morning pages. you learn a language by showing up daily. you keep a body by showing up daily. the skill is the same skill, only the object changes.

我以前老觉得「学英语」和「练身体」是两件事,一个用脑一个用腿。可今早走着走着,觉得不对,它们底下是同一套纪律:定了就做,做就别讨价还价。这大概就是迁移:把一样东西从一处搬到另一处还能用。

speaking of which, i noticed my sleep has been better since i started this whole early-rising thing. not perfect, but better. the body and the mind are not two departments that file separate reports. they are one account, and a deficit in one shows up as a deficit in the other. i read somewhere that a tired brain literally cannot hold a new word, which explains a few of my worse mornings.

还有件事,我昨天翻到以前自己写的一段:说普通人最回避的支线任务里,「给爸妈打个电话」排得靠前,大家都躲。其实身体也是,最该 daily check 的就是它,我们偏不爱看。今天把这个念头接回来:我这身子,也得像记单词那样,天天点个到。

so here is my small transfer for the day. the same stubbornness that makes me open this notebook at six thirty, i will lend it to my legs. ten minutes of movement is not a workout, it is a promise i kept to myself. and a promise kept is a muscle too. the strange part is, once the legs learn the rhythm, the mind follows, and the whole day stops feeling like a fight.

i kept thinking about mountains this morning, and not in a postcard way. back home in 古凉州, five ridges sit within one day's reach, and each one asks something different of your legs. 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山) is the one that gave the old city its name; people have been walking up it on the thirteenth day of the fifth lunar month for as long as anyone can remember. a little further south, 凉州天梯山 holds a cliff site that art historians treat as the starting point of a whole tradition. to the east, 天祝乌鞘岭 is the pass where three great plateaus meet, and the wind there does not care how fit you think you are. further west, 天祝马牙雪山 wears white limestone that only looks like snow from a distance, and 古浪昌灵山 keeps a pocket of natural forest alive at the edge of the desert.

嗯,写这几座山的时候我愣了一下:它们我其实早写进赋里了,只是那时候写的是心境,不是心跳。

that is the odd part. years ago i wrote about climbing those slopes as a way of asking myself questions, about looking down from a summit and wondering what was still missing. i even let a phrase slip in about sweating on the ridge at 乌鞘岭, and i meant it as homesickness, not exercise. reading it back now, the body was already in the sentence; i just had not noticed. the same climb, two readings: one for the mind, one for the lungs. transfer is often like that, not a new fact but an old one seen from a different height.

i should be careful not to turn this into a fitness brochure. a slow walk up a gentle slope is still movement, and the guidelines say every bit counts. what i like is the arithmetic of it: uphill, gravity stops being a background condition and becomes the thing you negotiate with, step after step. you cannot argue with a gradient. you can only keep going, or stop, and both answers are honest.

语法笔记

three structures do the quiet work when you talk about habits and how they travel between parts of your life.

first, the used to family, which is basically the grammar of transfer. "i used to skip breakfast" means a past habit that stopped. "i am used to getting up early" means i am accustomed to it now, the state feels normal. "i am getting used to cold mornings" means the change is still happening. people mix these three up constantly, and the mix-up is exactly the mix-up between "i did it then" and "it feels normal now", which is the difference between a habit you dropped and a habit you live in.

second, the present perfect for a routine that started and never broke: "i have walked every morning this month." the emphasis sits on the streak, not the single act. contrast it with the simple past "i walked yesterday", which reports one event and lets the rest of the month off the hook.

third, a zero conditional for rules that always hold: "if you move a little every day, your body repays you." no "will" drama, just a general truth stated flat, the way healthy living actually works, quietly and without announcement.

fourth, comparative structures do the heavy lifting when you describe a slope. "the steeper the path, the shorter my steps" uses a paired "the + comparative, the + comparative" frame, with no "than" anywhere. a common fault is "the steeper the path, so i walk more slowly", which doubles up the connector. keep the two halves parallel and let the balance carry the meaning.

fifth, prepositions of movement are worth one quiet minute. you walk "up" a slope, "along" a ridge, "across" a plateau and "down into" a valley. "climb the mountain" is fine for a peak, but for a day's walking we usually say "go hiking in the hills" or "walk up the trail". the little word tells the listener what kind of effort you mean, so it is grammar doing real descriptive work rather than decoration.

一词多义 · 小心熟词生义

Common words put on a different face in a clinic or a gym, so the same spelling can mean something medical, something physical, or something from daily life. Check the setting before you open your mouth.

• fit: healthy (i feel fit) / to suit (this key fits) / a sudden onset (a fit of coughing). Three meanings, three grammar roles: adjective, verb, noun.

• spell: to write letters (spell a word) / a period of time (a spell of illness, a bout of sickness). The second is the one you meet on a sickbed.

• attack: a sudden medical event (a heart attack) / a hostile act (under attack). In a health context it almost always means "onset", never "assault".

• case: an illness (a case of flu) / an example (a case study) / a box. Doctors count cases, teachers study cases.

• run: to flee / to suffer (run a fever, to have a high temperature) / to manage (run a shop). The body sense is the trap for learners.

• sound: healthy (sound mind and body) / a noise / reliable (a sound plan). "Healthy" appears only in fixed pairs like sound mind or sound body.

• culture: to grow (culture bacteria, an old verb sense) / a way of life. In modern talk, only the second survives.

• condition: state of health (in good condition) / a requirement / the terms of a deal.

Each of these wears a second face in a hospital or a gym, so check the setting before you open your mouth.

注意: fit as "healthy" is an adjective (i'm fit), as "suit" a verb, as "onset" a noun (a fit), keep the three apart; attack in health talk nearly always means "onset" not "assault", nobody hears "being hit" in heart attack; sound for "healthy" only fits fixed pairs like sound mind / sound body, do not tag it onto ordinary things; culture as "to grow" is a dated verb sense (culture a sample), in everyday speech it has kept only the "culture" meaning.

金句解读

today's line comes from benjamin franklin, in his yearly almanac written under the pen name richard: "early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise." it first appeared in poor richard's almanack, which he published in philadelphia from 1732 to 1758, a mix of weather, proverbs and plain advice sold to ordinary households.

the proverb is a small machine. it does not argue, it stacks three payoffs in a row, health, then wealth, then wisdom, as if one good habit simply walks into the next. that is transfer written as folk wisdom: the discipline you build in bed and rising hours is not locked in the bedroom, it carries into your work and your judgement. franklin, a printer who taught himself several trades, clearly believed a trained habit in one room pays rent in another.

the word almanac is worth a glance: from medieval latin almanach, a book of the year's tables, calendar, moon, tides, planting dates. and temperate, the virtue the proverb quietly praises, reaches back to latin temperare, to restrain, to bring into due measure, the same root as temper and temperature. a temperate life is a measured one, not a cold one.

two cautions before we pin it on the wall. first, attribution: this is franklin's, not some anonymous folk saying, and the almanack is the source, so quote it as his. second, do not read it as a threat, "do this or you fail", it is a wager about direction, not a verdict on anyone's worth. a habit leans you one way, it does not decide the whole life. which is the same lesson as our transfer focus today: one skill moved to a new place helps, it does not magically solve everything.

Neuroplasticity and cognitive reserve: why a learning life is also a healthy one

The adult brain is not a fixed object that simply wears down with the years. It rewires itself in response to use, a property called neuroplasticity. Every time a person learns a word, a route, or a second language, connections between neurons are strengthened, and unused ones thin out. The brain, in other words, is shaped by what it repeatedly does, much as a path is worn by feet.

This is why researchers speak of cognitive reserve. A lifetime of study, reading and mentally demanding activity builds a buffer, a store of connections the brain can draw on when age or illness begins to erode the rest. Cognitive reserve does not stop decline, but it delays the moment decline becomes visible, buying a person years of sharper function. Bilingualism and late-life learning are among the experiences most often linked to this effect.

The mechanism is concrete. Synapses, the junctions where neurons pass signals, grow more efficient with repeated use, and the very structure of grey matter responds to training. What looks like "talent" is often accumulated repetition wearing a deeper groove.

There is a second, simpler point. A body that moves and a mind that learns are the same project viewed from two ends. Sleep consolidates the new connections made during the day; movement feeds the brain the blood and oxygen it needs to lay them down. You cannot separate the trained mind from the tended body, because one is the condition for the other.

Why the slope matters: a short physiology of walking uphill

Walking on level ground is already a controlled falling. Each step swings a leg forward, the foot lands, and the body vaults over it, recovering a little energy from the arc. On a gradient the geometry changes. The centre of mass must be lifted vertically as well as carried forward, so the work done against gravity rises with every metre of elevation gained. Physiologists express the cost in METs, or metabolic equivalents, where one MET is the energy you spend sitting quietly. Moderate activity sits at roughly three to six METs and vigorous activity above six, a scale used in the World Health Organization's 2020 guidelines on physical activity and sedentary behaviour. A brisk walk on the flat lands near the lower end; climbing stairs or hiking uphill with a load pushes the same person toward the vigorous band, because the large muscles of the thigh and hip must now lift body mass on every stride.

The response is systemic rather than local. Heart rate climbs to deliver more blood, breathing deepens to take in more oxygen, and the calf and quadriceps work harder on the way up. Descending is not simply the reverse: the muscles lengthen while under tension, which is why downhill walking leaves a particular soreness a day later. Uneven ground adds a third demand, since the ankle and the small stabilising muscles keep making corrections that a flat pavement never asks for. This is why a hill walk bundles aerobic work, muscular strength and balance training into a single unglamorous hour.

At altitude another variable enters. Barometric pressure falls with height, so each breath delivers less oxygen than it does at sea level. The body answers over days rather than minutes: ventilation rises first, then plasma volume shifts, and over longer stays the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood improves. That is acclimatisation, and it is a schedule, not a decision. The ridges around 古凉州 sit between roughly 2100 and 4447 metres according to government websites, a range where an unaccustomed walker will feel the thinness without it becoming dangerous. The practical advice in the same guidelines is unromantic and useful: start slowly, build gradually, and prefer any movement at all to none. A hill is not a test of character; it is a dose of load that can be measured, repeated and increased.

today's roots circle back to "life", "heart" and "measuring". i like how one small piece of greek or latin shows up in a hundred modern words, so learning a single root is really adopting a whole family at once.

the bio- / vita family: biology (生命之学), vital (生命的, vital signs 生命体征), vitamin (维持生命的胺, 维他命), vivid (鲜活的, 有生命力的).

the cardio- / vasculo- family, from greek kardia (heart) and latin vasculum (small vessel): cardiovascular (心血管的), cardiac (心脏的), vascular (血管的).

the plast- family, from greek plastikos (可塑的): neuroplasticity (神经可塑), plastic (塑料/可塑), plaster (石膏), prosthesis (假体, 外加塑形之物).

the serv- family, from latin servare (保存): reserve (储备), preserve (保存), observe (观察, 原义「守住看法」), conserve (保存, conservation 保育).

four families, one theme: a body that is kept, measured and moved is a body that lasts.

and two more families walked in with the hills this morning. the grad- / gress- family, from latin gradus, a step: gradient, gradual, degree, progress, congress, aggressive (stepping toward), degrade (stepping down). a gradient is literally a set of steps measured on a slope, so the word for a hill and the word for a university degree are the same metaphor wearing different clothes.

the scand- / scend- family, from latin scandere, to climb: ascend, descend, ascent, descendent, transcend, and scan, which originally meant to climb through a line of verse by marking its feet. even the word scandal once meant a stumbling block, a thing that trips the step. so when i say a climb is a conversation between my legs and gravity, i am also saying that half the vocabulary of improvement in english is climbing vocabulary. we rise through a career, ascend a throne, descend into detail, and transcend a limit. the language learned this from the body long before anyone wrote a grammar book.

⚡ 一嘴反应

if you asked me this morning whether i'd worked out, i'd have said no, then i remembered the walk, and that counts.

so here is my small transfer, borrowed from the discipline that gets me to this notebook: i'll lend the same stubbornness to my legs. ten minutes, that's all. and maybe i'll call my dad this week, the task most people keep dodging, the body and the family both need a daily check. small promises, kept, are the only ones that build anything. and if a habit compounds, i'd rather it compound in my favour.

发音连读

pronunciation is where transfer breaks down most often, the mouth keeps its own memory. four sounds that trip people up, with the trick for each.

• metabolism:meh-TAB-uh-liz-um / 国际IPA /məˈtæb.ə.lɪ.zəm/,重音在 TAB,中间的 t 在两个元音间会浊化成轻拍音,听感像 me-duh-BAH-luh-zum。the softened middle t is the part learners miss.

• cardiovascular:kar-dee-oh-VAS-kyuh-ler / 国际IPA /ˌkɑː.di.əʊˈvæs.kjə.lər/,重音在 VAS,词长但可拆成 car-di-o-vas-cu-lar 五块慢慢咬。break it into chunks and the length stops scaring you.

• sedentary:SED-un-ter-ee / 国际IPA /ˈsed.ən.tər.i/,重音在前,尾音 -ry 轻读成 -ree,别把中间的 t 读成重音。keep the stress forward, not on the middle.

• longevity:lon-JEV-uh-tee / 国际IPA /lɒnˈdʒev.ə.ti/,重音在 JEV,g 发 dʒ 不读 /g/,和 genius 同一族。the soft g is the giveaway that it shares a root with genius.

• gradient:GRAY-dee-unt / 国际IPA /ˈɡreɪ.di.ənt/,重音在 GRAY,中间 -di- 轻读,别读成 gray-DIE-unt。the middle syllable is the one that disappears in fast speech.

• elevation:el-uh-VAY-shun / 国际IPA /ˌel.ɪˈveɪ.ʃən/,重音在 VAY,首音节是次重音,四个音节别平均用力。keep the main stress on the third syllable from the end.

• acclimatisation:uh-kly-muh-ty-ZAY-shun / 国际IPA /əˌklaɪ.mə.taɪˈzeɪ.ʃən/,长词先切块 a-CCLI-ma-ti-SA-tion,主重音落在 ZAY。break it into five beats before you speed up.

• strenuous:STREN-yoo-uss / 国际IPA /ˈstren.ju.əs/,重音在最前,-uous 连读成 /juəs/,别把每个元音都读满。the ending collapses into one weak syllable.

the shared trap is the middle consonant between two vowels, which english softens into a tap, so do not over-pronounce it. the newer words add a second trap: long latin-derived terms carry one main stress and several very weak ones, and chinese speakers tend to give every syllable equal weight. pick the stressed beat first, then let the rest go quiet. that is what makes a six-syllable word sound like english rather than a spelling exercise.

多语种句尾

Task 1 写作任务(150 词 / 20 分钟)

The pie chart above shows how global deaths in 2021 were distributed across three broad cause groups. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make relevant comparisons. You must write an overview and group the comparison by category.

3 到 5 个描述句型(饼图专用)

• Non-communicable diseases accounted for the largest share, at 65.3% of all deaths worldwide in 2021.

• Communicable, maternal, perinatal and nutritional conditions made up 28.1%, more than three times the injuries slice.

• Injuries represented the smallest proportion, at just 6.6% of total deaths.

• Together the three groups add up to 100%, so the chart reads as parts of one whole rather than separate totals.

3 到 4 条范文要点

1. Overview: in 2021, roughly two thirds of all deaths were from non-communicable diseases, while communicable conditions and injuries made up the rest.

2. Leader: non-communicable diseases dominated with 65.3%, the clear majority of global deaths.

3. Gap: communicable conditions (28.1%) were over four times larger than injuries (6.6%), the smallest slice.

4. Context: 2021 was unusual because COVID-19 pushed communicable deaths well above the 2019 level of 18.2%, so this pie catches a pandemic year, not a steady-state year.

Source: WHO World health statistics 2024 (Global Health Estimates 2021).

引导理解(从凉州看世界)

Let me turn the lens back to 古凉州 (today's 武威). At the foot of 凉州莲花山 (姑臧紫山, the Purple Mountain of 姑臧), learning was never a luxury but a way of keeping the mind, and the civic self, alive. The 武威文庙, first founded in 301 under 张轨 of the Former Liang, still stands as the great Confucian temple of the northwest, a stone proof that this frontier town valued the trained mind as much as the armed one.

And 李自标 (1760-1828) grew up right there under that mountain. He left for the Chinese college in Naples, and by 1793 served as interpreter for the Macartney embassy to Britain. A boy from the mountain's shadow who learned to carry one language into another, he was, in the plainest sense, a lifelong learner, and the cross-linguistic transfer he practised, from 汉语 to 拉丁语 to 英语, is exactly the kind of mental training that modern neuroscience now says keeps the brain supple. What the essay above calls cognitive reserve, 凉州 lived as a habit: keep learning, in any tongue, and the mind stays its own master.

The transfer we practised this morning, from the discipline of a language to the discipline of a body, is the same move 李自标 made across languages two centuries ago. A skill learned in one place is never wasted; it walks into the next room and pays rent there too.

One more thing this morning made me stop and look twice. The five hills around 古凉州 are not five scenic spots on a list. They are five different kinds of evidence, and each of them asks to be read rather than merely admired. 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山) carries the name of the city itself: the old county was called Guzang after Guzang Mountain, and the same hill answers to three names in local usage, 紫山, 姑臧紫山 and 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山). In 《凉州阁序》 the opening line has someone climbing it to ask his own heart a question, so even the act of ascending was, in that older prose, a way of thinking. A local reading of 《元和郡县图志》 first gives "named after Guzang Mountain" and only then mentions the old story of a sound change, an ancient explanation rather than a modern linguistic verdict.

凉州天梯山 carries the art-history line, a cliffside tradition that scholars later traced eastward into the great northern cave sites. 天祝乌鞘岭 carries the geography line: the pass where three plateaus meet, where the monsoon limit and the dry interior divide, and where a walker first feels the wind change. 天祝马牙雪山 carries the geology line, pale limestone that reads as snow from a distance but is not, which is a small lesson in checking a name against the thing it names. 古浪昌灵山 carries the ecology line, a natural secondary forest holding on at the edge of the desert, with Qinghai spruce at the northern edge of its range.

The older prose puts it more plainly than I can. Six lines from 慕容洞唐's fu pieces, all of them about going up, and one of them only four characters long. 「汗挥乌鞘」 was filed under homesickness when I wrote it, and it turns out to have been a training log all along.

I put those five hills on three small charts this morning beside the weekly activity numbers, and the pairing is not as odd as it first looks. Both are about measured ascent. The WHO guidelines ask for 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity a week, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity; a hill asks for elevation gained rather than minutes spent. One counts time, the other counts height, but both refuse to reward you for standing still. The older prose I wrote years ago already knew about the sweat, even when it pretended to be about something else entirely. A line about sweating on the Wushao ridge was filed under homesickness; a line about grasping the Tianti steps to reach the top was filed under ambition. Neither was filed under health. Reading them again today, they were always about the body, and about the mind that has to accompany it.

That is the whole of transfer, really. Nothing new was learned this morning about those mountains, and nothing new about exercise. What changed is that an old sentence and a new set of numbers were finally allowed to sit in the same paragraph. A language, a pair of legs, a hill that gave a city its name: three things that were never separate in the first place, only filed in different drawers.
