Okay, it is Monday morning and I am scrolling with one hand while the porridge cooks, which is probably not the mindfulness my app promised me. Anyway. The International Telecommunication Union just put out its Facts and Figures 2025 report, and one number jumped out at me: 77 per cent. That is how much of the world is now online. In 2005 it was 15. Two decades, and the map quietly redrew itself.

I tried to say the whole thing out loud in English, like a news anchor. "Global internet penetration has reached 77 per cent..." and then my mouth simply refused the word penetration. 我满脑子都是「普及率」三个字，想把它们直接糊到句子上，结果卡了三秒，粥都快好了。So I switched to my usual trick: first think the meaning through in Chinese, then rebuild the sentence from English keywords only. Penetration, reach, coverage. Three words, one family, all asking the same question: where has the network actually reached?

The part that really got me was not the 77. It was the other side of it: roughly 2.6 billion people are still offline. That is not a rounding error, that is, how should I put this, 差不多两个半中国的人口，想象一下。Most of them live where laying cable is expensive and phone towers earn very little, so the market quietly looks the other way. Engineers even have a name for the hard part: the last mile. 这个词我好像在交通那期见过，当时讲的是班车和地铁，今天它跑到了网线头上。

Reading the chart felt familiar too. The line climbs steeply, then eases off after 2018. 我前几天刚学过 rate of change，画过这种先陡后缓的形状，当时只当是数学题，今天它突然变成了真实世界：最容易连上的人都已经连上了，剩下的每一步都更贵、更慢。原来一条线上拐弯的地方，藏着的是钱的形状。

Okay, porridge is done. Enough screen time before breakfast. 今天先把 penetration 收进兜里，出门走路的时候嘴里再过两遍。

语法笔记

• Trend sentences love the present perfect when they run from the past into now: "The share has climbed from 15 per cent to 77 per cent." But a single fixed year takes the past simple: "In 2005, 15 per cent were online." 一个是坡，一个是点，时态先分清。

• per cent vs percentage: after a number, use per cent (77 per cent); before a noun, use percentage (the percentage of users). Never "77 percentages". 回扣上期：percentage 本身不是 rate。

• by + time point means "no later than": "By 2025, 77 per cent of the world was online." Over + a span measures the slope: "over twenty years". by 是截止线，over 是起止段，别混。

• 小坑：data 作主语，正式文体可用复数，"the data show"，我按上次记的来。

新闻复述 · 加餐

The story I picked for this Monday comes from the International Telecommunication Union, the UN agency for digital technology. Its Measuring digital development: Facts and Figures 2025 report says that six billion people, about 77 per cent of humanity, now use the internet, up from 5.8 billion a year earlier, and annual growth ticked up slightly to 3.3 per cent. But the same report counts 2.6 billion people still offline, and the gap maps almost perfectly onto income: 94 per cent of people in high-income countries are online, against 23 per cent in low-income countries, with Africa averaging 36 per cent.

Retelling it in my own words: the easy half of the world is connected, and what remains is the hard, expensive half. 与其说这是技术新闻，不如说是地理新闻，山有多高、村子有多远，网线就有多贵。

Before the internet, knowledge travelled the way goods did: by road, at the speed of a mule. A manuscript copied in one city could take months to reach another, and every copy was a small act of labour. The web changed the physics of that journey. Information now moves at the speed of light through fibre, and the cost of one more copy is close to zero.

Yet the latest ITU figures show that the old geography is not dead. In 2025, 77 per cent of the world is online, but only 23 per cent of people in low-income countries are. The internet did not abolish distance; it re-priced it. Where towers and cables are cheap to build, connection is nearly free. Where terrain is rough and incomes are low, the last mile is still a mule's road, only the mule now answers to a budget spreadsheet.

Standing at the foot of 凉州莲花山（姑臧紫山）, it is tempting to think that connectivity is a modern word. It is not. The city this mountain watches over, 武威就是古凉州, made its name on exactly this business: it stood part-way along the overland routes where goods, scripts and skills changed hands, a relay station for knowledge long before fibre. The craft behind the 前凉张轨铜奔马, with its split-mould casting and iron core inside the legs, was itself a piece of engineering passed down such roads. And a boy who grew up near this mountain, Li Zibiao, walked out of it in the 1770s and turned up years later in Naples as an interpreter; his road took years, today's takes milliseconds. 凉州学于我，说到底就是一个习惯：用这条最新的路去学世界，再顺着它把古凉州讲回去。

描述句型（折线图专用）：
